    The old fan was working but making a high pitched noise, so as you say if we havn't knackered the transformer it should still work with exactly the same fan. I think we will put the old one back just to see if the transformer is still working ok, if so we will opt for exactly the same fan...

    The new fan is a Mentis ME100/4HT 220-240 50 Hz 20w. We are trying to connect to the new fan not transformer.

    The old fan was a Greenwood Airvac AXS100SVIHT 12v-50Hz 20w. There is a switch outside the bathroom above the door and a box on the other side in the bathroom.

    The reason we put black in the neutral was because there was a black feeding into it the other side from the fan. So what you are saying is ignore that and try grey.

    Yes it did have a timer and came on when we switched the light on. It carried on when the light was switched off until it timed out or humidity was ok.
