    Rusty lintel problem

Hi all, I have noticed cracks developing in the brick work outside and inside along the exposed side of my semi. With the better weather I have gone exploring and have uncovered three old iron lintels in varying degrees of rusted state. Two opposite one another, either side of the cavity above...

Method of fixing/supporting flat roof joists

Hi Aztec, The method I used involved two 7"x2" timber bearers bolted to the longest walls opposite each other such that the top edge of the timber is level with the top of the blockwork. Then 3x2 timber fillets screwed to the front of the bearers such that the bottom of the fillet is level with...

Felt roof - To Lap Or Not To Lap?

Hi cotswoldbuilders I plan on going for it tomorrow. I'm guessing from your reply that there are no disadvantages to doing it my way? One thing I have thought of is that I will need to apply mastic to the top of the gutter laps before laying the first strip or at least before I fix it over the...

Felt roof - To Lap Or Not To Lap?

Just laid the underlay of my flat roof two layer self adhesive felt system. I'm using Wickes easy seal as I've read some good reviews and so far its been a breeze. Method of fixing/supporting flat roof joists

Many thanks chickenlips. In the end I opted for No.4 as it seemed the easiest option. The 7x2 timber bearers are held up by 24 M12 through bolts and the joists are notched over a 3x2 fillet and skew nailed into that and the bearers. It all seems pretty solid :)

Method of fixing/supporting flat roof joists

I am installing a new flat roof in my new garden building. Due to height restrictions I need to use some method of hanging the roof joists between the top of the walls. There will be 11 joists each spanning 3.6m and at 40mm centres. I plan on using 175x50 joists. The wall are 140mm single skin...

    Lintel advice please

Thanks Tony, I think I'll plump for the 140mm, as you say, to be on the safe side. Sorry that was meant to be 1.2m for the door - dyslexia strikes again! Are there any other types of lintel you would preferably use in my situation?

    Lintel advice please

I need to install two lintels in the front wall of my new garden building for the door and window. The building is constructed of 140mm dense 7N concrete blocks in a single leaf. There will be one layer of blocks above the lintels. 7x2 roof joists plus firrings spanning 3.6m will sit on those...
