    Is my new gully/drainage ok?

I'm not sure how much of that is sarcasm  I've got a fall of 1 in 60 over the length which I assumed was ok. I see what you mean about not going with the flow, but I was a bit limited with options - the drain runs under a 1930s extension after that gully so couldn't really go anywhere...

    Is my new gully/drainage ok?

My garage roof has always just drained directly on to the ground through the downpipe, it has never been connected to any drain or soakaway. As I'm getting a new driveway done in a few weeks I decided to connect it up to the existing rainwater drain. There is a gully connected to the original...

What is this tiny drain pipe?

Definitely leads to sewer...it is only 2 meters from my inspection chamber, so can see the water start flowing as soon as I pour it down the pipe. No other properties going through my inspection chamber. Removed the pipe and closed it out now!

Infill for blockwork steps - concrete or sub-base?

I'm building some new steps outside to the back door as the ground level is about 50cm lower than the door threshold. Steps being built out of concrete blocks and finished off with sandstone paving to tie in with the patio. I wasn't sure what is best to infill the blockwork with - either...

What is this tiny drain pipe?

Attached a photo, as you can see the drain is over a foot from either wall. Poured some water down it, a big bogged up with mud at that entry point but did see some water flowing in the inspection chamber so it is connected up to the main drain. Guess that means it must have been either for...

What is this tiny drain pipe?

Possibly, but no indication of any downpipe having been present at any point near it, and it would be an odd place to take rain from guttering at that location (as well as being over a foot away from any wall)

What is this tiny drain pipe?

Doing a bit of digging close to the house (built in 1910) ready for building some patio steps to the back door and came across a small diameter open clay pipe in the ground. The internal diameter is about 2.5 inches. I'm not sure where it runs and assume it is no longer functional as there is...

    Disc for cutting sandstone paving?

Been out cutting some slabs today so thought I'd report back... Definitely seems that the blade direction was the issue...took off the dust guard and rotated the grinder, and it now cuts through slabs much easier, with the blade pulling the tool forwards into the material as it should do, so...

    Disc for cutting sandstone paving?

Makita DGA513Z 18V Li-Ion LXT Brushless 125mm Angle Grinder No, not left handed. The problem is that dust shroud only lets you fit it to the grinder one way... yep, the dust hood will only fit to the grinder one way, and that is with the blade rotating upwards, presumably so that dust...

    Disc for cutting sandstone paving?

hmm well that vid is what I am doing as in moving the tool away from my body as I cut. The only thing I'm not clear on is blade rotation, looks like in that pic blade is rotating clockwise down into the slab, whilst for me it would look anti-clockwise. Hopefully to be a bit clearer, the setup I...

    Disc for cutting sandstone paving?

Ah right it sounds like that may be what I am doing wrong then and probably why the blades are getting knackered! So just to be clear I should be cutting like this then, pulling the tool towards me:

    Disc for cutting sandstone paving?

Diagram below is what I am currently doing...blade rotating upwards, pushing the tool away from me is that right?

    Disc for cutting sandstone paving?

yeah one of the Bosch discs I've used was classed as a turbo disc. I am starting to think it may be blade direction in relation to the slab, I was fixed with the blade direction due to the bust shroud only fitting on one way. Will try it in the morning

    Disc for cutting sandstone paving?

maybe a stupid question, but what direction should the blade be turning when cutting into the paving (if that makes sense) - should it be rotating downwards as you cut forwards, or rotating upwards? Or does it not matter?

    Disc for cutting sandstone paving?

as far as I know, yes...the label is facing out and on the blades that have a direction arrow it's in the same direction shown on the grinder

    Disc for cutting sandstone paving?

Thanks, that's not a bad idea actually going half through on one side and half on the other. I have noticed a lot of wear on the centre (non-cutting) part of the blade due to the depth I'm going through. Definitely worth trying anyway. I will also try a higher speed and see if that helps (I...

    Disc for cutting sandstone paving?

Here is a pic of a knackered blade can see over-heating marks The angle grinder is 125mm Makita 18V LXT. Using it with a dust extractor hood.

    Disc for cutting sandstone paving?

I'm in the process of laying a DIY patio with 25mm smooth sandstone slabs. I did consider hiring a specialist Stihl type masonry saw for the cuts, but at £30 for a weekend and knowing I would probably end up needing it for the next 6 weeks at the speed I work, I decide to purchase a 125mm angle...

Short retaining wall thickness (for patio)

I'm having to build a short retaining wall for a raised patio, in order to take up the slope in my garden. At it's minimum, the wall will only be 100mm high (above ground level) and at the maximum will be 300mm high. Once built, I will be backfilling with compacted Type 1 before laying the patio...

Footings for retaining wall on disturbed ground

I probably wasn't clear - the retaining wall will run in line with the new soil pipe (directly over the top where the empty trench is in the photo), not perpendicular. So using a lintel won't work. The wall will run for about 3 metres.
