    No she's 84 and has arthritis so the only cleaning she does is light stuff with a feather duster. As for poking it she doesn't even have a poker and there is nothing wrong with her mind so that wouldn't happen.

    Just as an update I think I solved the problem. I fitted two halogen candle bulbs which will hopefully last longer.

    Not sure if I could get ones to fit. The ones in there at the moment are candle bulbs, so pretty small as bulbs go.

    I'll give the lower wattage bulbs a try then and also experiment with the position to see which side lasts longest. Thanks for all the suggestions

    Yeah as you say they are mounted horizontally and are bayonet fitting. Would the suggestion of a lower wattage make a difference, say 25 instead of 40? My main concern really is safety. If the fireplace is dodgy in any way I wouldn't want it in the same room as my mum.

    I don't think there is anything to make the lights flicker. Would lower wattage bulbs be a better idea?

    No they are usually either Phillips or Osram.
