Thank you for the diagram. However, I only have black and red wires (not including the earth which is half yellow and half green). Is this my problem. Should I try swopping the two wires of the same colour?

Yes, I connected up the wires in the same way as the previous switch. As the wires are the old fashioned colours, I had two black and one red (or two red and one black), so I put a peice of white sticky tape around the com wire to make sure I got it right. Maybe one of the wires is loose. As...

I put in a two way dimmer switch. I can turn it on and off from one end. However, at the other end (not dimmer) I can only turn it off - not on. Help!
