Help. Builder has sanded face of bricks on front of house

Thanks for the helpful posts. I actually walked around the street and neighbouring streets and there are some with an external render and painted which actually look quite nice so this is definitely an option. With regards to just repointing and repainting, is there a risk around damp as the...

Help. Builder has sanded face of bricks on front of house

A good question. I do not understand the process to replace the bricks. The wall is obviously two bricks thick, so I don't know the speed with which the front bricks are removed and replaced. From your comments, its sounds like you would take down the whole wall and start again. How exactly...

Help. Builder has sanded face of bricks on front of house

New photo's attached. On the left hand side, there is no damaged brickwork touching the neighbour. On the right side, they have just gone up to the paint line. They have removed some bricks from the wall on the right hand side to see condition on other side of brick. This area was...

Help. Builder has sanded face of bricks on front of house

No, we are renovating to move in so not actually living there yet - both sides are rental houses though. (the lady is wifey') One side shares a joint porch wall which protrudes, and this has been rebuilt (with agreement from both sides) as the bricks had basically perished due to leaking...

Help. Builder has sanded face of bricks on front of house

Thanks for all the replies. More photos coming soon. House is a terrace, so have asked the lady to take some showing more of the front, and showing the adjoining parts to the neighbours.

Help. Builder has sanded face of bricks on front of house

It is 2 bricks thick, as the house is a solid wall construction. Not sure of exact measurement of bricks but the house is circa 1905.

Help. Builder has sanded face of bricks on front of house

yep. the whole front is like that too. he initially used chemicals, but the reason he gave for the 'sanding' was re the repointing to get sharper edges as said the top and bottom lines of the bricks were crumbled.

Help. Builder has sanded face of bricks on front of house

Thanks Rich. Yes, most of the other houses in the street are painted (probably not with limewash either, just masonary paint which I think ours was and which I understand is bad for the walls.) We wanted to expose the bricks but this has backfired!! My nervousness with limewash is...

Help. Builder has sanded face of bricks on front of house

Thanks. Yes, I feared that. My worry is because the house is terrace in London, the appearance of the external facade will obviously have a financial impact on future values but also on the actual saleability of the place if the bricks have been replaced. I have read that you should be...

Help. Builder has sanded face of bricks on front of house

In trying to remove exterior paint and repoint the house, the builder has sanded the bricks on the whole front of the house so that these are now a golden colour and very soft. The whole front basically has severe spalling. The house is Edwardian and it is a solid wall contruction. The...

    Boiler selection (Storage combi)

Hello, Shortly going to install a new boiler in 4 bed, 1bath,1 shower terrace, and going for a storage combi (space very tight, no room for system, boiler will sit in a 'utility area' which consists of 3 x 60cm units!) In terms of flow/pressure, we have sufficient pressure (3bar), and...

    Bi-fold vs slide and pivot

Hello, Has anyone had any experience of the 'new' slide and pivot (retractable sliding) doors as opposed to bi-fold. Was pointed to them by a work colleague. Seems they all slide individually on a pivot, so have much smaller frames (and not as restricted on setups on how many doors go...

Height of raised party wall on dormer loft

James - It is accepted that raising of party walls can be considered within your own boundary so it is within permitted development. Woody - no need as such (other than than ceiling joist at the rear of the property goes into the wall, so the wall needs to be higher than this to enclose the...

Height of raised party wall on dormer loft

ps spoke to the planning officer who said that it was his view of reading the class B1 rules that the height of any part of the extension (so including the raised party wall) cannot be above the height of the existing roof (which excludes the chimney and parapet) and so the parapet must be...

Height of raised party wall on dormer loft

Hello, Sorry for asking this question, but I have immersed myself in so many P.D rules I have forgotten what I know and don't know! Raising the party parapet wall for a dormer loft extension - does the raised parapet wall have to be kept below the ridgeline of the existing roof (taken to...

    Raising neighbours chimney breast

Thanks Woody. Not using joint but appointed surveyor for neighbour is another surveyor from same firm. (they didn't respond to our notices, but they are responding now when we contact them.) The surveyors said they would issue an addemdum to the award (so I presume this is in effect another...

    Raising neighbours chimney breast

would this trigger the 2 month notice again? Would the neighbour be able to appoint a different surveyor? (as the first was appointed for him and we have incurred fees for the appointed surveyor) What are the neighbours options (given we need to cap, remove or raise the stack) - can he...
