Just in case anyone reads this and wonders how I fixed it.... There was another pipe running about a metre away from the rad. This was laid tightly across many joists and was causing the problem. Fixed it using some lagging and widening the joists so that the pipe would not rub against them.

Don't think it's the valve. Felt the pipe as the heating was on and I could feel a vibration when the knocking sound occurred. Could be that there is a blockage although the system was flushed recently. I don't think it's a joist as when I lift the pipe slightly it still knocks, unless it's...

That's basically what I'm wondering. If it's not the valve then it must be something else. Just wondering if it's a possibility.

Sorry, I've think i've caused some confusion. I don't have TRVs at all. I was just saying that i'm aware that a faulty one can cause a problem but mine are all regular valves (non TRV) and if the same could apply here.

Any ideas, anyone?

It sounds like a knocking noise, as if something is banging against the pipe.

If anyone's interested... Found that the central heating pipes were pressed against the underside of the floorboards. I had to chisel some wood on the joist around the pipes and then plane the underside of the floorboard to give the pipes room.

Thanks - I'll look into that. If that doesn't work then I hope the problem is the valve because I don't know what else it could be.

Yes they do. There does appear to be ample room but the pipe is quite solid and there is no give.

I've replaced the brackets but I've noticed that on two of the radiators there is the ticking sound coming from one of the valves on each of the radiators... Do these valves need replacing? If so how much hassle is it? Thanks

Will try replacing the plastic brackets first and then taking it off completely. I did take it off last month when I was redecorating but it was drained and not hosed.

So getting my rads flushed will sort that out then?

@ joe-90 Yeah logically I agree. I think it must be debris or the fact that some of the spacers are missing. I will have to try and replace them this weekend or put some electrical tape on the hooks.

I suppose I could cut a small piece of electrical tape and stick it on the hook to prevent metal rubbing against metal..?

I have a few of the plastic spacers missing. Where can I buy replacements or is there something else I can do?

Hi, Thanks for the replies. My pump is set to 2 (3 different settings available) so I've now set it to one. I've already put the leak sealer in the system as instructed by the plumber... didn't realise it would be detrimental to my central heating system. If it is metallic debris then...
