    Regarding the 'cut' red wire. When I first disconnected everything I only saw two red connectors in terminals 4 and 5. No sign of any peice of red wire anywhere.

    The fuse did trip once. It's back up now. There are no fuses as such to blow. IT just tripped. The other two blacks were connected to terminals 2 and 3 when I connected one black to 7.

    Ok. It's strange about this cut red wire. I will leave it as is then. I thought the other problem was which black wire connects to terminal 7. There are three of them and exactly the same. No marking to denote the wall switch feed. I tried each black to terminal 7 but still did not work.

    I never removed the conductors in postion 1 and 8. 8 is the brown lead to the bulb. So I can't replace it with your suggested black.

    Yes one earth terminal in ceiling rose, and one in the wall switch terminal on the back plate.

    Yes three cables each with a black and red conductor. In the ceiling rose is a plastic bloc with 8 terminals. Position 1(blue) and 8 (brown) are associated with the lightbulb. 2 and 3 have black wires 4 and 5 red wires and 7 is black Does that help?

    Hello scoby Great name. The light is in the lounge downstairs. The panel switch on the wall has two switches. One for the ceiling light and one for two wall lights. Inside the panel switch the one cable flex has four core. An earth (yellow/green), red, blue and yellow wires. Steve
