    I've bought some new 3 core+earth (to eliminate one possible cause) and will try out the installation at the weekend with that to see if it makes any difference. The old wiring looks a bit shabby.

    Thanks, I'm happy to try that - can you suggest a simple part (maybe via a link.?) that I can use to safely terminate the switched live? I will let you know the result of course. I appreciate your feedback anyway. David.

    The model number of the replacement fan is the same as the original - EV 4HT (EMCOGroup). No bulb was changed, of course :) Thanks, David.
