I've bought some new 3 core+earth (to eliminate one possible cause) and will try out the installation at the weekend with that to see if it makes any difference. The old wiring looks a bit shabby.

One question guys - there is nowhere for me to connect the earth wire to from the 3 core+earth cable, so I've (poorly) tried to reconnect the earth into that clear plastic piece in the photo - the one that looks like a telephone plug, and that was already attached to the earth with the previous...

Thanks, I'm happy to try that - can you suggest a simple part (maybe via a link.?) that I can use to safely terminate the switched live? I will let you know the result of course. I appreciate your feedback anyway. David.

The model number of the replacement fan is the same as the original - EV 4HT (EMCOGroup). No bulb was changed, of course :) Thanks, David.
