    Consumer unit replacement cost

OP here – this sounds like what happened when my electrician tested the RCD and gave it a "fail". Fairly sure he never tested it in isolation. I'd like a second opinion ideally but that would mean an extra invoice and the recommendation may still be the same: change the board. Any thoughts?

    Consumer unit replacement cost

Thanks. The electrician said the RCD tripped as soon as he plugged the meter in – before pressing the test button – hence "no result", but don't think he tried to test it in isolation.

    Consumer unit replacement cost

Thanks, and the only way of getting RCBOs on there would be to replace the board?

    Consumer unit replacement cost

Late follow-up question: so if an RCD on an obsolete board (5486 in this case) fails, it can only be replaced with an old generation RCD or the whole board changed? Also wondering if it's wise to get RCBOs on all circuits with a new board on a 30+ year old installation, or if I risk having...

    Consumer unit replacement cost

Points taken thanks - I hope I've just misunderstood him but have asked for some clarifications on what happened during testing and why he thinks the whole board needs changing.

    Consumer unit replacement cost

There are 3 C2s (=urgent action required) on the EICR, two of those possibly connected – "loose connections at outlets" and "open ring circuit on live and neutral" as well as a high earth reading. The board is listed as an F1 Further investigation required, "Rcd bs number obsolete unable to...

    Consumer unit replacement cost

No he indicated that this was due to a problem with the board when testing the RCD. His comment on the report was "Rcd bs number obsolete unable to test"

    Consumer unit replacement cost

I just had an EICR done and the electrician recommended swapping the CU unit out as it tripped as soon as he plugged his meter in. It's probably 30 odd years old, BS 5486, so makes sense. My question is if £600+ is a reasonable cost for installation of a new 5 circuit CU? It's in London. Thanks

Sound insulating underlay on top of fibreboard?

Grateful for any advice regarding sound insulating underlays. Am going to install a 15mm engineered wood floor on a concrete subfloor and want to decrease any impact sounds as much as possible. 1. Technics 5, Cush'n'wood and Timbermate silentfloor gold seem to be 3 decent options, does anyone...

    Certification dilemma

The pump manufacturer recommends it but they don't mandate it. Should one be installed though to comply with BS 7671?

    Certification dilemma

Indeed I am yes - obviously not very competent myself! It's 2.8A with a 5A fuse, 640W. On a 16A dedicated water heater circuit so I guess that's enough then. So for the self cert to be valid only the switch (currently in the kitchen) needs to be moved?

    Certification dilemma

Cheers, it's a 5A pump - will check with him what the circuit is

    Certification dilemma

Didn't know that, very helpful thanks. I guess this could be an additional issue then as it's a 200 l cylinder. However I never use it as there's an economy 7 heater too which does all the work. Is this regulations or good practice? Would it be flagged in a PRI?

    Certification dilemma

thanks for your quick reply. Yes the pump is under the bath behind a panel, the cable from it runs through the wall to the on/off switch in the kitchen (back of sink cabinet). This is then connected back through the same wall the other way into the cupboard with the water heater. So if...

    Certification dilemma

I just had the electrics for my new shower pump installed by a competent but unregistered person. He added it to the water heater circuit in the airing cupboard and it runs from there into the kitchen to the switch. The shower pump is located in the bathroom. I know I can't have this...

CW tank in airing cupboard - neg or pos shower pump?

Thanks for your reply. I was actually recommended a positive pump elsewhere and it looked like that would work according to Grundfos installation doc as well. In this they said that the outlet had to be >250mm below the water level in the tank. Confusingly in other installation instructions...

CW tank in airing cupboard - neg or pos shower pump?

Dilemma explained in heading really, some more details: Water tank sits on top of HW cylinder in airing cupboard, about 120-140cm from floor. Shower outlet in bathroom will probably be below this, but shower head (when raised) won't be. 1) I read in a separate post that I a positive pump...
