    Low height dishwasher?

Our dishwasher has completely died and we need a replacement. The problem is our kitchen is very old and the counters are lower than is standard now. So we only have a hole 81cm tall, possibly 81.5 at a pinch, for the dishwasher. We can’t cut out a section of worktop as that’s the draining...

    Supplementary bonding of heating controls?

The CU was replaced about two or three years ago. It has a wacking great earth cable going from it to the main electricity company fuse. When it was done the heating system was bonded together and then back to the controls through the board, so maybe he decided that this was enough? He certainly...

    Supplementary bonding of heating controls?

No the pipes in question are in the boiler room, a few feet from the boiler. I had a skim through the Internet about supplementary bonding and all the pipes in the bathroom are plastic now, so it’s not needed there. In pipe terms the boiler is miles from the bathroom.

    Supplementary bonding of heating controls?

ive just had my boiler replaced by British Gas and I’ve got a few electrical questions they didn’t cover. Their electrician pointed out that I need a 10mm earth cable from my consumer unit to the gas pipe and water main. That’s fine and I can get that done. Previously the switch for the...

    Canine Darwin Candidate

I've had foxes dig up and chew through my Virgin broadband cable on three occasions now. According to one of the engineers who came out it sounds to them like a mummy fox, so they try to get at it. Of course it's Virgins fault for being lazy gits and not burying the cable properly in the...

Radiators in series not heating up

I have bled all the rads, hasn't improved them. I gave them a good long bleed to try and force through any airlocks, but there was no air. I'll try just running them by themselves sometime today if I can, see if that helps. The pump is on top speed.

Radiators in series not heating up

i have an odd arrangement of radiators in one bedroom of my house. There are three radiators in a bay window and they are plumbed in series! Hot water enters the right one, then there's a bit of pipe between 1 & 2, then a bit of pipe between 2 & 3 and then the exit valve on the left. The thing...

Relocating sockets and routing cable in new(ish) house.

Is the socket relocation on the same floor? Have you considered using trunking? There are many types now available that are designed to look like a bead around the edge of a wood floor, or fit on top of skirting boards and so on. Might save you a hell of a lot of hassle.

    Garage door control replacement

I'm looking to replace my ancient electic garage door controls. The door is an electric roller type with a light alongside. Currently you have to press the remote once to turn on the light then Again to start the door going, which is just annoying. Having had a look inside today the motor is...

    SWA to T&E

The information seems a bit confused on that. It also says: So unless they think that garages never get below 10 I would guess there has been a mistake somewhere. Ours certainly operates fine and stays nice and cold all year long.

    SWA to T&E

You can get freezers designed for unheated out buildings. We have a big chest one in our garage. It's a John Lewis own brand. Check on the label that it specifically says that and you'll be fine...

Cheapest places for bathroom suites and kitchens?

I've been told by my brother in law (who's a tradesman) that Ikea kitchens are very good quality, and very cheap. I'd definitely try there if you have an Ikea within a reasonable distance. B&Q claim to be the nations biggest kitchen retailer and are again cheap. If you can fit it yourself then...

Power adapter for 400 LEDs? The last one blew!

You really need to work out the current draw. A small super bright LED might typically be 10-30ma, so 400 could draw 12amps. If it's anywhere near that it's not surprising your PSU blew. Can you see any writing or numbers near the LEDs. Numbers such as 3630, 5050, 5630 or 7020. If you know what...

Should I bother with RCD sockets

As the above post you evidently can't be bothered to read an entire thread. In my OP I said I had the socket at the end of 50m of SWA. So my calculation is correct thank you, as I will be using one conductor as live and one as Earth. I was trying to show BAS that I had thought of it...

Should I bother with RCD sockets

I'm uSing three core, 2.5mm SWA with one of the cores as the Earth. So from my calcs I have 100m of 2.5mm cable, with a resistance of 0.0074 ohms/m, so the EFLI is 0.74ohms. From what I've read that seems to be low enough to meet the requirements. Does that seem okay to you?

Should I bother with RCD sockets

im installing a socket on my gate post as part of my gate instillation, for very occasional use of garden machinery rather than having miles of extensions trailing. The socket and gate motor will be at the end of a 50m SWA cable running from my garage. It will be on its own MCB in the garage and...

    Mystery radiator - help!

You can sometimes get a serious airlock that ordinary bleeding doesn't clear. What my plumber showed me to do was to (with the system running) turn both radiator valves all the way off, then remove one of the bleeding valves. With a bucket to catch the water slowly turn one of the valves back...

    Planning Enforcement

Sounds like the people who try and tell a court of law it has no authority over them and demand to be tried by a naval court. It stems from some idiots misreading/misinterpretation of a few words of the law. Highly amusing, and needless to say it never works

Memo to self: Your leg is not a cutting board.

So I'm an idiot. I was using a sharp Stanley knife to strip the insulation back on some cable. Sitting on the grass in the garden as it's for outdoor lights. Nothing to rest on so I used my leg. And the inevitable happened. Slipped, cut a gash in my thigh. Spent the rest of the afternoon in A&E...
