If you want to save some time, you can use one coat plaster to fill the chase in one go. The finish will be a little less perfectly flat, but once painted you'd be unlikely to notice unless shining a spotlight on it etc. I would definitely turn off the electric beforehand.

Hmm not sure that hotrods will work with a convection/gravity system though? I think my best bet is to go for a stainless radiator maybe?
