    Painting emulsion on PVA'd plaster

Just had some plastering done and the plasterer has very neatly joined one ceiling skim to another. To make this easier he has painted the edge of the existing plaster with watered down PVA. My emulsion does not seem particularly interested in covering the PVA'd section. Is there anything I can...

    Earths need individual sleeves?

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll see if he fancies doing them again! Cheers, Chris

    Earths need individual sleeves?

Hi, easy question for you pros - Spark has wired up some grid switches with multiple earth conductors in a single sleeve. Is that ok? There's quite a few earths so I reckon he's done it to hold them all together out of the way. Looks a bit shoddy where the earths initially gather together to...

Mains cables for powered roller blinds - bit naughty or ok?

Hi John, that does sound more sensible and there is actually no blocks on top of lintel, the wall plate is sitting directly on the lintel (this was to maximise window height) so the wiring route would be easy. However, I'd need a fused flex outlet actually in the recess and then there would be...

Mains cables for powered roller blinds - bit naughty or ok?

Thanks for your input guys. Window is pretty much sat on outer leaf, 70mm frame set ~40mm back from front of facing brick. I like Echo's idea using a grid flex outlet. Spark is now saying why not put the FCU up near ceiling like you would a fan isolator. The wiring drops down from ceiling so...

Mains cables for powered roller blinds - bit naughty or ok?

Hello all, Having some cables routed to window reveals to allow powered roller blinds to be used in the future in a big open back room. Electrician is putting FCU close to each window but the route the spur then takes concerns me! The cable needs to appear in the top corner of the window...

Does boiler need FCU in same room?...

Thanks all, think I'll get him to put a 3-pole isolator in boiler cupboard, that way the gas bloke might survive my Mrs turning the heating on during its annual service. ...and I'll label boiler to state where FCU is.

Does boiler need FCU in same room?...

Thanks stem, I have got a labelled FCU so am happy that it's clear what it does. Just seemed strange not to have an isolator right by boiler. Spark pointed out that if you did have one it would have to isolate the 'heating call' signal too otherwise the boiler would be unpowered but still live...

Does boiler need FCU in same room?...

Hi all, wanted to check my electrician's heating scheme with the experts... Our boiler is in bathroom and controls/wiring centre thing is downstairs in kitchen. The fused switch for boiler and controls is in kitchen in nice accessible place... but obviously nowhere near the boiler. Is that ok...

Too many lights on a single circuit?

Hi TTC, That's a curious one - so how is a single lamp of <400 lumens treated? Not low energy? Not applicable? Not a lamp?! The lamps we have in the office claim to be 280lm / 3W so doing well on the efficiency front, but <400lm...

Too many lights on a single circuit?

Thanks for the reply ericmark, Yes, we have broken areas into separate lighting circuits too. So we don't have to fire up the whole 36W for no reason!

Too many lights on a single circuit?

I think our BCO will consider installing 24W of lighting an energy efficient solution.

Too many lights on a single circuit?

Sorry, could you expand on that? Do you mean did we say on our submitted plans how the lights would comply with Part-L?

Too many lights on a single circuit?

Well, yes it's fairly gigantic! Part-L? We did consider LED luminaires that could not have other lamps stuffed in them, but was getting extremely expensive. BCO should be fine, by the time this is finished 50W halogens won't exist...

Too many lights on a single circuit?

Also, am I right in saying that when there's no earth connection on the GU10 fittings he should still be continuing the earth continuity along the length of the radial? I don't think he's done that...

Too many lights on a single circuit?

Thanks TTC! What I'm not used to is these grid switches so looked a bit odd that cable splits to feed multiple further circuits but I can see that all cables can happily carry more current than the breaker will allow. Cheers!

Too many lights on a single circuit?

Thanks TTC, That's a relief. Actually, I think he may have used 1.0mm² (no writing on side). I assume that'd be ok on 6A MCB? Cheers, Osc

Too many lights on a single circuit?

Hi, thanks for reply. I've had a look and that MCB feeds the following: 1.5mm radial: - toilet light fitting (3x 1W GU10 LED) - garage light fitting (3x 1W GU10 LED) - utility light fittings (2 fittings, each 3x 1W GU10 LED) radial then feeds grid switch box where it splits. It feeds two...

Too many lights on a single circuit?

Hi all, after a bit of advice here. My builder's 'electrician' is in the process of adding lights to a new extension. I want to check what he's doing is ok (I don't quite trust him for various reasons!) We have a radial serving about 24 GU10s in a large room (intention is to use 1W to 3W...
