so coming up from downstairs is the 2 cables. with the red into com and black then the other red into L1 the red into L2 comes from the wire going to the light itself Hope that makes sense??

Sorry for not coming back to everyone.... Ill kids all weekend. So someone asked to see the cables for the upstairs switch so I think it's clear from these images :-D

hi john, the sp holes are just empty and came without any screws so i assume they are not meant to be used.

they are mk ones that where picked up from B&Q

I replaced the downstairs one first but then did the upstairs one straight away so did not check after each was done.... with hindsight that would have been the clever thing to do :oops:

No there is no earth. I have a multimeter. Not sure I know how to use it that well :-)

was after both where replaced. although the pair of black cables on the upstairs single where bunched together and not connected to the switch

Thanks for the input. I did notice the that the black cables are in the switches downstairs but not on the upstairs switch. mentioned it to the sparky and he said the upstairs ones are just straps??

funny he did mention that. its on the list for summer this year when we are away...... we did know it when we moved in. Strange thing was he didnt use a multi meter or anything basically just swapped the wires around. tried it... then swapped them over again! Even I could manage that :-)

Thanks John, I thought I got a competent electrician yesterday but no joy?? I used check a trade to find him as well so not just a friend or anything. Still charged as well even though he couldnt fix it. but I guess its his time I paid for :-)
