It is sometimes easier to find where the noise is coming from when you remove the boiler panel. However you have to be gAs safe registered to do this. It would be prudent to call an engineer if the boiler is due a service anyway and point out this issue

Can you give any further info. Eg. The condition if the system water. Did you fit the magnetic filter after you noticed issues with the system. It may be that there may be slight blockage in the divertor valve or heat exchanger and very hard to diagnose without knowing that you've ruled out...

If top piston does not come out fully then it seems that you may have a blockage in the heat exchanger. You may have to get an engineer to investigate further and rule out other possibilities.
