Replacing old cord-type flex for modern plastic one

Thanks John. I will be very careful and do as you suggest. I'll pop it into a shop and get an electrician to give it a once over anyway for good measure. :) No it's a different one! I haven't got an old electric fire fetish - honestly!! It's this one... (have taken link off just in case...

Replacing old cord-type flex for modern plastic one

Ooooooooh just noticed what you said: "You can still buy cotton-braid covered flex, it is often used for electric irons". That's a good idea - would look better and more in keeping with the age of the fire. The reason I want the flex changed is safety really - there are bits of the flex which...

Replacing old cord-type flex for modern plastic one

Yep - it's that type of fire. I have NO idea of whether it's PVC insulated or rubber! Maybe I should just take it to an appliance shop? I'm just not sure where these types of jobs are done!! :D

Replacing old cord-type flex for modern plastic one

Hello, I have an old fire in perfect working order but would like to change the old cord lead to a modern plastic one. Is this easy to do? Would an appliance repair shop be the place to get it done or could I do it myself? Thanks, Fionn :D

Rusty safety grille on electric fire

Hello, I've acquired a really nice old electric fire but the lattice grille which acts as a safety barrier in front of the elements is really rusty. Is there anything I can paint on or any kind of product I can use to spruce it up? Many thanks, Fionn :D +++++++++++ Hello and...

Art deco fire - no earth

I know - I'll be very careful, but it really is the most gorgeous fire - never seen anything else like it (it's a girlie thing!) It'd be amazing in working condition.

Art deco fire - no earth

Hi Andy, Thanks for replying. What does the double insulated symbol look like, and where would I look for it? In the plug? Sorry if I sound like a complete fool, by the way! The fire is very old - 1930s. :)

Art deco fire - no earth

Hi there, Thanks for replying. I haven't got a picture right now, but it's a very old fire (1930s) if that helps. I opened up the plug and I saw there was no earth wire, which worried me. Sorry to ask this if it's a daft question but what is double insulated? If I replaced the flex with...

Art deco fire - no earth

Hello! Please forgive my complete ignorance to do with anything electrical! My problem is that I've just bought a ceramic french art deco electric fire, and it has no earth. The lady I bought it off says she used it for years over in France. I realise it isn't safe without an earth, and am...
