When I first checked my fuse box I was a bit confused but can now see the hob/cooker has a 30A fuse so I should be OK for quite a few new hobs. Yes I was. I turned the power off and measured the diameter of the wire.

I have an old Hotpoint solid plate hob that I am considering replacing. The wiring was done when the kitchen was installed. The existing wiring is 3 core (red/live, black/neutral, and earth). I think it is 4mm copper. The wires are 5mm incl the covering. Most new hobs I see require 30/32...

I have got some silicon lubricant. Where should I apply the lubricant to? Do I need to remove the valve cover and lubricate anything inside?

Before seeing this I had repeated the sequence again and this time at step 7 the boiler did fire up, took about 2 minutes to do so. Since then I have adjusted the CH stat a few times and the boiler has fired up every time. I will try the steps again in full tomorrow and if it works...

I'll turn the power off tomorrow to have a look and take a picture. Managed to see what is in the cable box above the programmer. Labels on some of the wires confuse me

I will do that. I think there are 2 cables coming up from the programmer, one for HW and one for CH. The other I now think is from the boiler. I have noticed that the pump and the valve both whir away when the timer is on but the boiler is not fired up (this applies for both CH and HW)...
