    Solenoid fitted and boiler fired up straight away. The rgi I had on standby for the valve also said that there were no seals or anything that would be disturbed :) thanks all for your input, much appreciated

    In your defence it's more electrical advice :) I do get 240v when calling which is why I'm assuming the solenoid or valve. I've got a solenoid coming as it's the cheaper and easier option. If that proves fruitless then it's over to the gas safe bloke

    As I understand it, the solenoid is a coil which, when powered, produces a magnetic field which in turn moves the valve to allow gas to enter the burner. So I'm assuming that if the coil is broken then there will be no continuity and therefore no resistance?

    I'm not gas safe no, I just wanted to make sure I'm testing the solenoid correctly and whether this is the defective part. This doesn't disturb the gas system i.e. the actual supply plumbing as the solenoid sits around the actual valve on the outside. If it proves that it is the valve itself...
