Sorry, should have posted this a long time ago. Problem was eventually traced to a nipped 'O' ring between the water manifold and pump. Looked a bit awkward to replace with lots of bits having to come out but fixed the problem and no need to top up in teh following 12 months.

Thanks for the thoughts. This is what is making me wonder though .....(friday in 1st post). 0500 in the morning, boiler been off since 2200 the day before. No rain or wind. Water dripping out of left rear of boiler and getting to around 2 litres after an hour and stopping. Pressure gauge drops...
