    Socket Ringmain RCD isolation issue

Last night, i went to isolate an upstairs socket to replace the faceplate as it had cracked. I flicked the RCD marked 'Sockets Up' and the socket i was working on went dead as expected. However, some other sockets upstairs were still live as a stereo was still on, but a few sockets went dead...

    Boiler cycling

I have a Glow Worm Ultimate 40 conventional boiler and a standard vented heating system. When the house is cold and the CH is switched on, the boiler will run as normal for about 20 mins, then cycle on for about 1 min then off for about 3 mins until eventually the room stat cuts the boiler...

    Tiled in cooker switch???

I recently had my kitchen tiled and the tiler tiled in the cooker switch as opposed to tiling just behind it. If the switch becomes defective, i would need to chip the tiles and grout off around it to remove it. Question is, is this workmanship in accordance with the building regs? Cheers...

circ pump - can i change it myself?

My circ pump is knackered (with power on to the pump, nothing happens) I could pop to my local DIY store and pick up a new one for £30, am i allowed to fit it myself? If so, is it just a case of closing the suction and discharge gate valves, unwiring, remove old one and fit new one? How do...

    Boiler cycles on and off

I have a vented CH system and conventional boiler (standard set up) The boiler was recently given its annual service. The bloke said to have the boiler thermostat up to the max position, the temp sensor up to about 22 degrees, and then balance each room temperature as required on the radiator...

Hot water from the cold tap?

i know this has been covered in the past, but the thread i read about it, didn't cover my issue. When i turn the cold tap on after it hasn't been used for an hour or so, and when the CH is on, there is a slug of hot water that comes through for about 15 secs, after which time, it returns to...

    Noisy central heating

I have an indirect, vented heating system that makes too much noise. The noise could almost be described as a whoosing or like a small waterfall(!) and apears to be coming from the loft or airing cupboard pipework. I read somewhere that the switch on the circ pump may be set to high (its set...

    6mm or 10mm - that's the question!

I'm about to install a 10.5kW shower about 12m from my consumer unit. I know i can get away with using 6mm cable provided it does not exceed a particular length (which it doesn't) and it is clipped. Question is, does it have to be clipped at regular intervals along its entire length, or just a...
