Thank you. That does make sense. The ticking (accompanied by sparking) only happens when the brushes are failing to make proper contact. Also I did try to wipe clean the commutator but didnt notice anything obvious. Maybe just a small unevenness is enough to wear down the brushes??

Thank you. The pump filters are both clean. Do you mean the pipe from the hot water cylinder to the pump? The cylinder has been changed since this problem occurred and this had no affect on tyhe problem. Also wouldnt flow on the cold side keep the pump running in any case?

I will have to check how the expansion pipe is fitted, but as only one of the pump's flow switches needs to be engaged, wouldnt the cold side flow keep the pump running?

I was going to say that the hot water from the taps remains unaffected, however I just checked it and although there is no change in hot tap flow when the shower is first turned on, when the shower cuts out there is a very small reduction in hot tap flow. Very minimal though.
