    Runaway Cars

So should I have assumed your initial post (#11) was simply repartee? If I had done so I would have given you a 'like'

    Runaway Cars

I have no idea & it was not my intention to cause any offence. To me the wording of your post appeared to infer that you were unaware of what the phrase meant & as these engine problems occurred decades ago (certainly in my experience) you may not be familiar with the phrase.

    Runaway Cars

Not so much the title itself, more about what it actually means .. a diesel engine that over-runs the governor & revs. to destruction. Often running in reverse, burning engine oil & breathing through the exhaust, which means the 'stop' control has no effect. You have to be of a certain age to...

Engine 'running away' not the car :giggle:

Handy if you happen to be in the habit of carrying one around with you.

    Runaway Cars

The old Commer 2 stroke diesel was infamous for that, if the driver was quick enough he could stick it top gear & stall the thing. Don't know what today's 'elf 'n safety would advise with regard to remedial action

    Automatic into neutral at lights?

What you refer to as 'hill start' has been a function of automatics for decades, my own experience of it goes back to the 'sixties with Rover P5's & Humber S/Snipes. Your concern for others when it comes to brake light dazzle is commendable (y)

    Automatic into neutral at lights?

Pretty much. I driven countless thousands of miles in trucks/buses etc. powered by large diesels, but for my own vehicles it's a 6 or 8 cylinders of petrol power. As for EV's I'm a long way from being converted to ownership for logistical reasons: anyway I could never justify the cost of...

    Automatic into neutral at lights?

Thanks for the reply. The idea for a plug-in is purely a fuel saving move as she is currently using my classic, which on such short journeys in winter burns through a litre of unleaded in just 4 miles, plus increased wear 'n tear. Interestingly I'm the opposite to you in my opinions with regard...

    Automatic into neutral at lights?

On what level? Most of our (or rather 'ere indoors) journeys are less than 5 miles each way so surely a plug-in hybrid, charged at home, would give her the necessary range with the back-up of an engine if deciding to venture further afield on any occasion. For pre-planned longer journeys I have...

    Automatic into neutral at lights?

There is a point if the majority of your journeys comprise of each-way mileages of less than 5 miles, plus the ability to charge on your driveway ;)

    Automatic Gearbox Freewheeling.

I'd venture to suggest that if you are searching for ways to save such a miniscule amount of fuel you may have chosen the wrong car. The last time I recall drivers going to such lengths to eke out a tank of fuel was decades ago during petrol rationing

    Automatic into neutral at lights?

Both my cars are ZF autos, but have a combined age in excess of 60 years; so no fancy 'auto-hold' etc. When stationary for more than a few seconds I simply apply the hand-brake whilst remaining in Drive. In exceptional circumstances, ie long a traffic delay on a hot day I would select N, but if...

Forgot to SORN car, no insurance penalty

Interestingly, since my earlier post (#3) one of the owners has been contacted & given 28 days grace to either insure his car or SORN it. He will chose the latter alternative to avoid a fine.

Really jerky DS3 when pulling away (Ed.)

Any changes with the new clutch are academic I suppose, as having to avoid using first isn't the way to go in the long term. Sounds like a job for a specialist with knowledge of your particular model. Have you done a search for a user forum for your make of car? Over the years I've found them...

Really jerky DS3 when pulling away (Ed.)

Strange indeed .. I would have thought that any clutch/flywheel faults would be eliminated once the clutch was fully engaged. Any misfiring at low revs. that cease once the revs, rise? Tried pulling away in a higher gear?

    Suggestions For Brighter Reversing Bulbs

Thanks for the reply. I was under the impression that many of these technology's were mandatory for cars produced in Europe on/after certain dates, for example daytime running lights, TPM etc. & I (wrongly) assumed that Canbus was one of them.

    Suggestions For Brighter Reversing Bulbs

You would think that manufacturers would embrace a particular technology around the same period, but it appears not to be the case. Your 2004 vehicle doesn't have bulb monitoring (Canbus?) whereas my BM built six years earlier has

    Suggestions For Brighter Reversing Bulbs

Yes it will. My old BMW has been retrofitted with LED rear number plate bulbs to facilitate a reversing camera & I get a 'check # plate lamps' warning on the cluster when the key is first turned.
