No, unfortunately we don't have room for that. We have maybe 1/4" or 1/2 cm between the cabinets and the ceiling.

If the wood panels are pretty smooth and somewhat shiny I'd use smooth surface primer. That stuff works great. My mom did not use it in her kitchen when she painted the wood panels and about a week later my grandma walked too close to the wall and the paint just peeled off (in one piece!!)

I had that happen to me before too. Now I use a credit card (or other thin plastic card) and run the side down the tape. It seems to help seal the tape and prevent the paint from bleeding through. And yes, painting away from the tape does help also. :)
