Surfaces on which cats will not crap!

We obviously have some cat lovers here! The cats living near me are neither clean nor hygenic nor do they bury their mess, quite often they just do it on our grass, thats why I find it so annoying!

Surfaces on which cats will not crap!

Hia We are getting a large chunk of our garden dug up (it is on a slope and I want some flat) I don't want to lay a patio as sometime in the long term future I plan to extend the house so its not worth the expense. Is there any surface that anyone knows of, stones or bark type stuff that...

    Distemper

Went to Wickes to try to get some alkali resistant primer, was basically laughed at when we mentioned distemper, they had never heard of it. Anyway they sold us some primer seal stain block. I am not convinced reading the tin that this is really what we want. Does anyone know exactly what...

    Distemper

Hia Kind of carrying on from my last post about cracking paint..... What exactly is distemper, what was it used for? Also from peoples past experiences is is quite likely that if we have it in one room it will be in the others too? (just want to make sure I am fully prepared when we...

    Cracking paint

Hi again The house is 1928, would this tie in with the use of distemper? I don't recon it is going right back to plaster, it just looks like a funny greeny pinky colour, so I guess sizing the walls wasn't the answer anyway. I have tried as a last attempt, washing down the...

    Cracking paint

Its a B&Q funky colours matt paint. On closer inspection, where the paint has come away it has taken my coats of watered down paint off as well. The paint left where it has come away is very powdery, I wonder whether its some weird old paint that doesnt want to bond or something? Is...

    Cracking paint

Hia We are decorating my little girls room and when we pulled out some rawlplugs the paint just peeled away in thick layers which we then had to scrape away. I then gave the wall a couple of coats of watered down emulsion thinking the problem might be that the plaster was never sized...

    Asbestos tiles

Hi I know this isnt really diy but I hoped you guys might be able to help  I recently had a guy around to do a quote to replace the tiles on a small outbuilding. He added into the conversation that the tiles were asbestos. Just to prepare myself, will this mean alot more expence...

Sanding after stripping paint from wood.

Hia I am about to start stripping our staircase (I know, long and tedious job!) Once I have removed the paint I realise I will have to sand the wood to get a final clean smooth finish. I am looking to see what kind of sander would be best as I can see a few different types and am not sure...

Silver foil to catch hot paint

Hia Posted earlier about what could be used to catch hot stripped paint (from hot air gun not flamed) to protect floorboards or carpet. Was wondering does anyone recon silver foil might be up to the job?

    Stripping gloss from wood.

That peelaway stuff sounds like a right hastle, the one I mentioned says you literally slap it on cover with film, leave then wash off with water. I know what you are saying about just paying somebody to do it and there is nothing I would like better than to sit back and watch somebody else...

    Stripping gloss from wood.

Thanks for your help guys, I feel a bit more scared now! I am planning to use an electric gun not blow torch, and want to take it back to wood and not repaint if hopefully the wood is good enough. I had a look on the link you posted and it recommends a product you smear on (Kling strip)...

    Stripping gloss from wood.

Hi I am about to have a go at stripping my staircase and back door back to the wood and have never done it before (or much diy at all!) I have a heat gun, is there a set distance to have it away from the wood to prevent scorching? Also I realise the paint coming off is going to be hot...

Fitting a dado rail, can I do it myself?

I guess I would use mdf, less cost if I mess up! One of the walls has a large curve on it, could mdf be cut and bent in the same way as wood? Maybe I will get a quote, its just that I am a full time mum and fancied actually geting my teeth stuck into a project as I don't get much chance to do...

Fitting a dado rail, can I do it myself?

Hi The dado in our 1930's house desperately needs replacing, the last person who did it did a horrendous job! I would like to have a go myself at doing it but don't just want to repeat the disaster. I have no tools or experience! Is it quite a tricky job that by the time I have paid...

    planning permission

Hi I thought you did not even need to apply for planning with a smaller conservatory anyway, this is what I was told by the council (I know we are in different areas) I was told I could pay for 'approval' if I wanted but it was not nessessary. So the way I see it the problem you will have...

How do I make a round hole in a single layer brick wall?

Hia I need to fit a vent for my tumble drier. To make the round hole in the wall do I really need to buy some kind of round, toothed drillbit, or is there another easier, less expensive way? It doesnt need to be overly tidy as the rectangular outer vent thingy will be fixed over it. I am...
