We were looking into the same with our doors and found that 1.5 metres is the recommended minimum opening (http://www.yourhomerenovation.co.uk/expert-advice-a-guide-to-bifold-doors/). Even at 1.5 metres it would probably still look better with French doors. See half way down the article.
