    Shed insulating

Breathable membrane. Pics I see of people using it wrap the whole carcass in it then put their walls straight on to the membrane. But I’ve read there needs to be an air gap between the membrane and wall. Yes using exterior grade hardwood and will be well sealed with a few coats of preservative.

    Shed insulating

Hello all. I’m building myself a shed from 2x3’s initially with ply outer walls and flat ply roof covered in epdm but at a later date will add some cladding to the outside walls to make it look nice stood off some smaller battens. We’ve a load of fibreglass insulation left over at work which...

Old extractor vent hole found in wrong place

I just chiselled away the first layer of bricks next to the old hole and got some flex through at an angle. It all fits nicely in place now where it should. Big bastard of a hole to fill in somehow now, foamed around the ducting at the exit end just to seal it up and try to prevent drafts coming...

Old extractor vent hole found in wrong place

That was me standing in an awkward position and starting on plaster that made it wander like that. Once into a solid pilot in the brick it would have straightened. Plastic pipe was the plan, the whole short run of it starting with an elbow. But if flexi allows me to get in at a bit of an angle...

Old extractor vent hole found in wrong place

Brilliant, cheers. First will try to knock what's left of the first skin of bricks to the side out and see if I can squeeze some flexi through. Would the old hole want filling with anything substantial or just any old crap? It was packed up with rubbish before and rendered over outside and...

Old extractor vent hole found in wrong place

It's the same size, 5" pipe fits down there nicely, it's just 75mm too far over for the chimney to fit round. In fact here's a pic

Old extractor vent hole found in wrong place

Sorry if this is the wrong forum but seemed most relevant to building. Happily starting to core away for our cooker hood and all the plaster broke off one edge revealing an old hole 140mm of to one side that had been rendered over at each end. Problem is we've already bought, built and fitted...

    Load bearing joint into breezeblock

Nothing fancy. A small beam to use as a trolley track to lift up to max 30kg loads off the floor, pull it over a mezzanine floor and lower it. Convenience to get boxes off the floor that are too big to carry up and down a ladder. The beam assembly it's self would be more than strong enough I...

    Load bearing joint into breezeblock

Cosmetic appeal doesn't matter at all but cost does, it's commercial premises. The top arms would be bolted into the second brick from the top, the lower arms at a 45 degree angle bolted in a metre below. I will try get measurements and draw up what I am planning tomorrow if I get a chance. Will...

    Load bearing joint into breezeblock

How much load can a breeze block take with the correct fixings? I want to attach some 3m steel steel box section running parallel, offset around 1m away from the wall, attached at each end (unsupported in the middle). Complete weight of assembly including brackets, bar and the load it's...

    House electrics

I followed the circuits round, pulled the fronts off the back boxes and peered in. No end to the 'new' circuit, which has been redone as the sockets including boxes and wire are all newer. Brown blue and insulated earth compared to red, black and bare earth on the other. I couldn't find the end...

    House electrics

I've been and had a bit of a poke round tonight. There's been considerable work done upstairs in the past and it looks like an almost full rewire, professionally done by the look of it, very neat and tidy. The wire leading upstairs to a bedroom I'm guessing is old wire left in place m off a...

    House electrics

If my car failed it's mot I would fix it. If it was something I couldn't do I would get a mate to do it. I don't know any electricians to ask. Gas appliance would obviously have to go off until I could afford to get it sorted. This is a bit different, the electrics obviously work ok, everything...

    House electrics

I'm not a complete electrical idiot. I'm a fully trained sound engineer/studio tech and my training involved all sorts from making cables, finding and getting rid of/protecting against faults in equipment such as ground loops, emi, rfi etc. fairly complex stuff, all of which has come into use...

    House electrics

Big consumer unit, mcb/rcd whatever it is (I did say I know little about domestic electrics ). All the sockets on one switch. I've just gone to grab my multimeter, calliper and metal/voltage detector thingy but got dragged into work. I'll set to this evening and map all the wiring...

    House electrics

And just to add is assumed it was a ring circuit due to the new position of the new mcb when it was installed and position of new sockets in the wall next to it would have made perfect sense for a ring circuit.

    House electrics

It's a big old cable. I (edit: I thought) it's a ring, I haven't tested it with my multimeter yet. I originally thought it was two circuits but I found a wire leading upstairs around where I thought the midway point would be on the downstairs circuit. None of the sockets are fused but additional...

    House electrics

Is it normal for just about every socket in a house to be daisy chained from spur to spur and all the sockets to a single point on the RCD? It's a Victorian terrace so the wiring is old as the live is red, neutral black and earth is bare twisted pair, live and neutral look to be 6mm2 cores at a...

    Plasterer didn't skim walls!!!

I've got some contract Matt for other areas which have just been replastered properly. Plenty of left over. I could just splash a few coats of that over to blend the patch in with the rest of the wall?

    Plasterer didn't skim walls!!!

Brilliant, thanks all. I'm perfectly happy with it the way it is then and a paltry sum well spent for the purpose. Just wanted to make sure and not find out the hard way a couple of months down the line after £300 worth of wallpaper started falling off (y)
