    Consumer Unit Replacement

I suppose when mine were put it, it was standard for the CPC to be the conduit so it wasn't deemed necessary to put earth terminals on the back box.

    Consumer Unit Replacement

Just to clarify what I have been trying to say, I just taken the face plate off the hallway passage switch and taken a photo. Note as I said earlier its an old style back box with no earth terminal and the screws aren't earthed as I got confused and I was remembering a socket face plate and not...

    Consumer Unit Replacement

That is what I thought because the screws holding the face plate will be connected to the back box which is connected to the conduit. Mind you that said, where the screws go through the face plate is normally connected to the earth terminal on the face plate, so it will be earthed while the...

    Consumer Unit Replacement

What I meant that if the back box had an earth terminal then the earth wire can be connected and this would earth the conduit itself because the conduit isn't earthed properly at the CU end. I thought I read somewhere that it had to be earthed, it looks like I misunderstood it.

    Consumer Unit Replacement

in this case I think it was more the case of can't be bothered to do a proper job than practical experience as apparently has over 20/30 years experience and I did quiz him when he first came round to look along with the other Electrician, third one i asked for quote never bothered to come to...

    Consumer Unit Replacement

Well there was a lot of reviews over a period of time and to me they all looked genuine. I think maybe he is OK for small simple jobs but not for something bigger like a rewire.

    Consumer Unit Replacement

Yes i agree with you about the safe plates but they were what he put down. As far as data cables go for the flat Ethernet cable that is a good idea but for fibre optic I think its OK to run along with the mains cable as it can't interfere with the signal nor can any voltage be carried by it...

    Consumer Unit Replacement

Hi Guys Sorry I have been out of it for a long while mainly because of not being able to do a lot as my right arm was a bit useless for quite a while and my work was overloaded. I got another Electrician in to do the rewire for me and I hoped that would be the end of it. The first day he...

Well I guess I should do an update as I had another Electrician in to do the rewire but that has just added to all my woes. it started off well (first day), once he actually decided to turn up.

    Consumer Unit Replacement

Yes your right, sorry got my terminology totally wrong there. Stranded is what I meant. He was saying for me to replace it with a single strand 2.5mm2 T&E. Do you guys use flexible steel conduit at all ? As I was thinking its a lot easier to put down especially for me with my arthritis playing...

    Consumer Unit Replacement

maybe not complete rewire as some parts are OK, but the Kitchen definitely needs to be redone for sure and made into a separate ring. A friend of mine told me its best to replace my singles (with T&E) as they are multi-core and could be frayed thus reducing its current capacity but my singles...

    Consumer Unit Replacement

Thanks for that, it is very useful to know. I just measured it as 4.2mm diameter, so its a 4mm2 cable then.

    Consumer Unit Replacement

i think they are 4mm singles like the rest of my ring main. I think I have worked it out, which explains why there are 4 conduits going up to the ceiling which I thought was unusual. A neighbour told me that the kitchen used to have 3 corner cupboards and i believe the first 3 conduits went to...

    Consumer Unit Replacement

Thanks I will have a look, the tiles I was thinking will have to come up as I think the wires go vertically up the wall just below the tiles with no protection or earth. So I can't leave it like that as its not safe so either I can disconnect the cable from the consumer unit or redo it...

    Consumer Unit Replacement

Exactly that is why I thought it was OK as its not a safe zone so not allowed with protective casing. They are the same as the singles run through the conduit so I don't think they are tails. Oh well out with my new endoscope I just got from Amazon and have a little explore under the floor near...
