    Structural glazing adhesive.

Do you think it’s ok on glass with solar reflective coating... I’ve seen that Dow Corning do a two part silicone which cures to form a sort of rubber gasket.. Over 60 quid a tune plus the special gun

    Structural glazing adhesive.

Hello I've got a leaking flat roof lantern with electric opening which is driving me nuts. Manufacturers have used an adhesive tape to fix glazing onto the aluminium frame lid. It keeps failing and we've had the glass out twice now but nothing is working. Can anyone recommend a commercial grade...

    Altering Staircase

Tony I've tried to find the provision in K1 where changes in level under 600mm do not apply to the regs. It only appears in older documents however and not the latest 2010 document.... Will still mention it though. Thanks again.

    Altering Staircase

Thank you both for your comments. I'll send some pics to LABC and hopefully I'll get a positive response. Ive tried your suggestion catalo but it takes up too much of the winder. Maybe a slightly different shape insert would work better. Thanks for your input.

    New Honeywell 3-Way Valve Leaking

Brave of you to just change the plate. Most engineers would change the complete valve to be able to give a warranty and peace of mind. Did the plate come with a new ball and spindle? If you used the old one then it may well be the O-ring that has perished or damaged on removal. Best. Ernesto

Potterton Kingfisher MF RS50 - overheating and clicking

Overheating is generally caused by a lack of circulating water. Many things can cause this such as blocked heat exchanger, pump failure, narrowing of pipework. The clicking sounds like the gas solenoid opening and closing, you would need to use a multi meter to test whether the fault is the...

    Altering Staircase

Grateful for your reply Tony and tips. With regards to the door my understanding was that the landing had to be at least the width off the staircase. In my case this is 800mm but it would be great to get away with 300mm. Where could I get clarification on this?

    Altering Staircase

Hi Does anyone know if altering an existing winder on a staircase to create a change in direction is acceptable. Trying to avoid a new staircase with proper landing as we already have restricted headroom and the increase incline required would make things even worse. Photos of rough setting out...

    Structural Beam Connections

I will need to measure this but think nearer 130mm... why on earth they trimmed out so much is beyond me as it only needs to clear bottom flange of main beam

    Structural Beam Connections

Having a bit of a mare with a couple of steels the have been delivered this week. We have a 7m 203x203x86 beam holding up rear of house and a 203x133x25 beam that connects to it to hold up an upstairs return wall. The connection specified was notching and welded end plate with 4 bolts that...

    RHS steel over 7m bi-fold

Theres lots online about these relatively new mini tracked cranes called Hooka. A lot of guys make a living out of buying one and offering their services to the industry, the same way guys do with a digger. Was quoted 550+VAT for the day to offload all steels from lorry and installation of two...

    RHS steel over 7m bi-fold

So to clarify he has asked for 600mm bearing on each side, the steel is therefore 8.2m I had wondered if he had concerns of twisting as well as deflection hence box section and not normal I beam. There is little in the way brickwork above steel, maybe 8 or 9 courses with a coping just enough...

    RHS steel over 7m bi-fold

Hi Have a largish single story rear extension in progress with a 7m opening for bifold doors. SE has specified 300x200x10 RHS steel with welded bottom plate for a soldier brick course. Small parapet built off steel which also supports 8x2 timbers for 4.5m deep flat roof finished with asphalt...

    Slate DPC...

Thanks for that Nikolas. What my builder is proposing is a normal dpc, another bed of muck and then 10mm of porcelain tile. This would make up the height we are trying to achieve.

    Slate DPC...

He was round today funny enough. I forgot to mention that we would be using a normal dpc... the proposal for the porcelain tile was to get over the difference in height of brickwork. The double layer slate dpc is about 20mm high so to keep the courses level we need to build up same amount on the...

    Slate DPC...

Have a double course slate DPC, about 15mm deep, on a 1930's house that we're adding a double storey extension to. To keep the brick course continuing through around the extension we need to build up in a similar manner. Apart from using slate are there any other similar materials with same...

    Cold Roof Insulation/Ventilation.

Can someone give me a few pointers please on best practise with insulating/venting a cold flat roof on a new project. The rear single storey extension to a detached house projects 4.8m and is 9m across. I'm proposing 200mm trussed joists running front to back within a parapet wall all round. I'm...
