Capping a live lead service line with Philmac UTC?

That's amazing, cdbe, thank you! May I ask what the diameter of the lead supply pipe was?

Capping a live lead service line with Philmac UTC?

thanks bob, now I understand. good call, i'll ask a couple of plumbers if they're willing to help me try to freeze it, but around here they won't even return your calls for a job that's less than $600. not enough people going into the trades in the US. everyone was told to go to university...

Capping a live lead service line with Philmac UTC?

Around here the plumbers charge a flat pre-negotiated fee for ripping out an underground service line. In my case, about $12,000.

Sorry to disappoint you buddy, but I'm gonna try freezing it first...

Capping a live lead service line with Philmac UTC?

Thanks again, all. None of the plumbers who said you can't put a fitting on a live line actually saw the leak, I'm talking about plumbers on other online forums. The plumbers who've actually been here and taken a look refuse to play around with a lead line at all under any circumstances. They...

Capping a live lead service line with Philmac UTC?

Andy, I'm handy with the grinder but afraid to get so close with an electric tool if this thing starts gushing. Also, couldn't the grinder heat the pipe and melt the ice plug if it's too close? At the moment I'm evaluating my options for performing the work. The clamp and epoxy patch have...

Capping a live lead service line with Philmac UTC?

Thanks Hugh, that was precisely my plan, with a ball valve attached to PEX attached to the Philmac coupling. I was going to practice first by cutting a copper portion of the service line downstream from the shutoff valve and trying the procedure on that section. It should have similar flow and...

Capping a live lead service line with Philmac UTC?

Bob, no kerb stop...the service line is 135 years old. The water meter (and the first internal shutoff valve) are in my cellar, *downstream* from the leak, so they won't do jack to stop the flow. There are no other isolators. The cost to replace the lead service line is prohibitive because it...

Capping a live lead service line with Philmac UTC?

I guess my last question is what is the best tool to cut the lead pipe? The space is quite tight. If I bend the pipe at all or vibrate it, I'm afraid the underground portion will break and I'll have a $13,000 service line replacement on my hands.

Capping a live lead service line with Philmac UTC?

Thanks again, it seems like you might've saved me! But still some complications to overcome... I removed some of the rubble from the pipe, and I can only go back about 12" before I hit dirt. I suppose I could dig farther back through the dirt, but I don't know how stable that would be. What...

Capping a live lead service line with Philmac UTC?

Thanks Andy! Altogether how many inches of the pipe must be exposed? And which freezing system do you recommend? I appreciate your help

Here it is coming out of the rubblestone foundation into the cellar. Outer diameter is 1.21". Below the ruler you can see a temporary patch made out of a rubber gasket, hose clamps, and epoxy that managed to stop the leak (for now)

Capping a live lead service line with Philmac UTC?

Hi, I saw someone on this board mentioning that he capped a live service line using the Philmac UTC. I was wondering if it's really possible to do this on a p, particularly in my situation. I have a 1" lead supply line that's leaking and it there is no shutoff valve between the water main and...
