    Thanks folks. I traced it back to a break in the live switch conductor.

    Yeah, it doesn't work with the switched live. It used to come on with the light, there was no separate switch..

    When I connect the permanent live and neutral to the fan, it does work. But it's permanently on of course.. So the fan does work.

    The bearing was done. Oil wasn't going to fix that.

    I'm swapping a bathroom extractor fan as the old one was squeaking. The old one has a timer, the new one doesn't. The picture shows the existing wiring (there is an uninsulated earth in there too). I'm presuming the yellow one is the switch live?
