can u put it down on hardboard?

The bath, sink and toilet are all in place so removing the floorboards would cause absolute havoc. It's something I just don't think is possible at this stage!

I am looking to fit a new bathroom floor around existing features such as a tiled-in bath surround, sink and toilet. The current room is carpetted above a ropey hardboard and then floorboards underneath. There is currently a little movement in the boards, and I obviously need to fix this...
