If my newel post has a wider base than the rest of the post I am guessing for at least the first and last spindle the 99mm max gap applies to the narrowest point of the newel post under the handrail? @DAZB @big-all

Thanks @big-all for your suggestions. I didnt see this until this morning but I did pull up a section of floor and add multiple fixings through a floor joist and the stringer, plus glue, plus and block I added between joists to butt up against the back of the newel post for even more support...

Just read this again, the figure 2 there is a section through figure 1, just to show the slot inside. As I am drawing out the notch here I realise it will be near impossible to get the angle recess to house the stringer Becuase of the notch shafts either side. Just can’t get at it! Any ideas...

I see what you mean! Basically make it into a small square dowel! How would you approach creating this fairly complicated notch? I should probably at least get a sharp set of chisels

@DAZB how would you go about this notch? The second image is a section that shows the angle bit inside to home the stringer. I wanted to avoid making the stringer section rectangle cause it took meat off and leaving it rectangular right through the newel would have a big section of stringer at...

Thanks! Those zip bolts are quite expensive so didn’t want to go down that road unless absolutely necessary!

@DAZB when attaching the handrail to the newel posts do you recommend any of those zipbolt fasteners or are they just the favoured option if you don't want any holes to fill in the post? Is it perfectly strong enough to wood glue the face and put one screw through into the handrail? I'm...

Im not quite sure im following with the bracket point The plan is to paint the rail so countersinking screws and filling with wood filler shouldn't be a problem

great stuff thanks again @DAZB i was looking at my stairs again at lunch and I'm going to need a little mitre at the top of the stairs like the picture shown. Is wood glue and timber screws enough at the mitre joint or how should I approach that joint? the mitre zipbolt looks too long for...

@DAZB do you have reccommedation for the glue to use when installing the newel? Iv read Polyurethane glue because its a decent gap filler too to combat less perfect notching of the post? theres a few on amazon... https://amzn.eu/d/9m7rmfr https://amzn.eu/d/bCYkvxg https://amzn.eu/d/ehMbqZp...

@DAZB I got bored in work, did a mockup CAD to see what the newel notch would look like....does this look like plenty of stability in the making?

Thanks very much. That’s a smart compromise to flatten the stringer to make an easier time of the notch in the post while offering up a bit more stability. Appreciate it

Thanks again @DAZB If going down to the joist with the newel is there need to straddle the triangle as well? Also the way I'm seeing it, it looks like I might only get fixings in one direction through the stringer newel floor joist. Is that enough with the glue or should I find a way that I...

sorry yes i didnt maybe explain very well. I 'thickened' the stringer to essentially move/offset the centre of the stringer. The handrail baserail newels will all be centered on the now thicker stringer Do you have a steer on the meat of the question in the post?
