Has anyone fitted the carbons sold on Ebay as "Miele Genuine Original" brushes? They are about a quarter of the price of buying the complete OEM part, but are clearly not an original part being thicker and shorter. If you have fitted these, are they any good? Thanks for any replies.

I would also suspect the diverter valve. I believe that the aqua sensor triggers the motor in the diverter valve and when the hot tap is opened, the motor can be heard to operate. Easy enough to take it out still connected to the power and see if it moves.

For anyone else looking, it is easily found by taking the small plate off the back of the machine (5 Torx bolts). Seems to be OK reading around 125 ohms at room temp. and dropping to 50 ohms in hot water (not boiling).

As soon as the machine starts to fill with water the circuit breaker trips. Disconnecting the earth wire from the socket allows the machine to complete the cycle without any further problems. I thought it might be current leakage from the interference suppressor and isolated it from earth, but...
