Thanks for the responses. It is a half brick wall then, just one row of bricks along. The house was built in 1905 and it's the original wall. It's 1.3m high and I would want to go about 20cm below the foundation level.

I am hoping to lay a patio in my back garden. The garden is sloped so I have started digging out to make the patio level. This has started to expose the boundary wall foundations. (single brick wall). To make the patio level I would need to dig below the foundation level for part of the wall...
