I think you might be right… although I would have thought that the issue would be the other way. Typically sludge/blockages I’d expect with central heating at floor level, but not necessarily with only a hot water cylinder.

The hot water only gets lukewarm whereas it was cold before. The feed is baking hot to the cylinder, the cylinder gets lukewarm, the return is a little less than lukewarm. The CH is hot and working.

I can see your point actually. I suppose technical there is a route to the vent through the return pipe and then through the cylinder. It would be against the flow, but if the h/w isn’t on then I suppose the circulation of h/w would not be flowing.

The make and model of the pump is TSG CP53. It is on speed setting 3. You can feel the vibration on the return pipe when the pump is on.

I’ve tried to layout the diagram exactly how the pipes and joins are connected and the position of the the system components like the pump and valves. So the vented pipe hanging over the f&e is represented correctly.

If the gate valve is below the cylinder will it still vent as it seems the the air is higher up in the cylinder coil? I suppose the logic is closing the valve and loosening the compression nut on the cylinder side will force the air to travel down attracted by the opening?

The only air vent is the overhanging vent above the f&e tank pointing downwards. Other than that there is no other air vents I can find. The gate valve is open as you turn it anti-clockwise. It also stops and doesn’t continue turning.
