That's a great comment, thank you. The passage way is shared in terms of access after checking the deeds so we will brief the contractors to be mindful of using it and not to store things along the alley.

Yes neighbours are always alerted and usually the application is publicly posted on your council's website. Good point about the above - what do you actually need permission for? Your council's website can explain what you do and don't need permission for.
