I'm not a builder... I'm in the middle of refurbishing my house and came across a floor joist that at one end is not on a hanger or fixed in any way. The newel post is notched out and the joist sitting against it. The house was built in the 1960s and wondering was this normal back in the day?

Been doing a lot more research and it looks like the parquet flooring will need to come up. The pain!
