    GU10 LED 'halogen' replacements

Ha! yes it would be... except I'm in need of a new CU anyway.

    GU10 LED 'halogen' replacements

hmm... yeah wouldn't be surprised if overheating is an issue. The bulbs are in a couple of fittings that have three globe-shaped metal receptacles - a perfect upside-down 'cauldron' for building up heat!

    GU10 LED 'halogen' replacements

Thanks for the advice. My consumer unit is donkey's years old, so probably no SPD? Maybe that's the reason I get through so many bulbs. Would I be right in assuming all new units would have SPD as standard, or is it something you specifically have to get? Was just looking on screwfix, and this...

    GU10 LED 'halogen' replacements

Hey all... I've been using these for quite a few years now. They don't seem to last as long as I would expect LED's to last. A year... 18 months maybe. Here's the thing: Am I right in thinking LED's only run on DC? Therefore... there's a tiny transformer inside the bulbs, is that how it...

    A question about starter motors...

Well... I have the starter stripped down... everything is clean as a whistle and looks good. I've tried gripping the pinion in vice grips and attempting to turn the armature by hand to simulate the "slipping" but presumably I'm not able to produce the kind of torque needed... plus it was an...

    A question about starter motors...

Hi all, this isn't actually about a car - it's a starter on a generator. My symptom is this (and it's intermittent): sometimes - the starter turns, but the pinion is very slow against the resistance of the engine and doesn't turn it over. I can hear the starter spinning internally... also high...

    Gas boiler electrical consumption

I see! Your powers of deduction have gotten the better of me! When I said everything on one level I really meant there's no upstairs, hence no appreciable gravity for the pump to have to work against... but you are actually right I didn't place the tank as high as it should be ideally. As for...

    Gas boiler electrical consumption

My intended use for the gas boiler would be for a short run on a timer, mostly cold winter mornings. I might also want to use it as an alternative means for heating water in summer rather than lighting a fire. Was looking at the vaillant ecotec range the smallest of which is 12kw. Interested to...

    Gas boiler electrical consumption

That's what I currently have in my solid fuel system - a Grunfos alpha 2, generally runs at about 7-9W on stage 1 setting. If I need to heat water quickly, I switch it to auto-adapt mode which varies up to about 19W. fantastic bit of kit, been running hassle free over 10 years now. It'll go up...

    Gas boiler electrical consumption

Probably wouldn't react well to voltage fluctuations. Thankfully my generator is pretty solid in terms of voltage and I have a good pure sine wave inverter. I have no trouble with washing machine, computers, etc. I've done a bit more research and I think I'll be looking for a heat only boiler...

Closed system boiler in open vented system

Sorry for confusion... I'm thinking of adding a gas boiler to an existing solid fuel system... and weighing up the options of what's available. It sounds like.. so far anyway.. that I'd be best finding a boiler suitable for a vented system

Closed system boiler in open vented system

Thanks... just to play devil's advocate... what if a 1.3 bar pressure relief valve was put on the vent pipe?

    Gas boiler electrical consumption

yup.. for example - rating is 150W... but that's a MAX figure, what the installation manual doesn't tell me is it's current draw under different conditions... so was asking if others with experience of such things might have some real-world examples.

Closed system boiler in open vented system

Don't really want to change my existing system, was just wondering if there's a way to keep the boiler "happy" so-to-speak so it works within a vented system.

Closed system boiler in open vented system

Hi folks... Is there a way to put a boiler meant for a closed system into a vented system? I've heard of putting in a filling loop instead of a filling tank... is this a good idea? Appreciate some informed opinions.. Cheers :)

    Gas boiler electrical consumption

Hi all, I'm wondering about electrical power consumption on Gas boilers - both combi and heat-only. I've seen quite a large variance in ratings, some being only 25W, other 150W. As far as I can reason, I'm guessing the two main sources of current draw would be the flue fan and the circulating...

Suggestions for a good affordable heat only gas boiler

Both the Viessmann and Intergas sound like excellent recommendations. Since I live in Ireland I'm looking around at what's available here... The Viessmann can be got here... somehow jumping in price from £970 in the UK to €1600 over here! As for the Intergas, all I get is a "contact us for a...

Suggestions for a good affordable heat only gas boiler

Hi all, I'm looking for a good heat only gas boiler that can fire about 6 rads and an indirect coil hot water system (117 litre tank), although not generally both at the same time. My existing system is solid fuel but I'd like to put in something I can have on a timer for cold mornings OR use...

Old combi boiler - never fitted. Should I buy it?

Hi all, Am considering the pros and cons of buying a combi boiler I've seen advertised. It's a Ravenheat RSF84E. What I do know is that these are no longer for sale and have been superseded by other models. The ad simply states "bought a good few years ago, never fitted" - and sure enough by...
