Very low pitch (1 degree) & zinc

Hello, we have a small part of flat roof, by our side return extension - about 3m x 1.5m (the main part of the extension roof is pitched). It's been built with a 1 degree slope, along the 3m run (this was due to issues with height with neighbours). I know zinc standing seam requires min 3 degree...

Replacement windows - made to measure or standard sizing

Hello, We are replacing our bay window with like-for-like UPVC (current frame is damaged and we want to upgrade thermal efficiency). What is the implication of getting a stock size window from a local company (well-rated), vs getting completely made-to-measure? We had a consultaiton with a big...

Internal sliding doors - soft close worth it?

Planning to buy some sliding door kits for internal doors (NOT pocket doors - just regular sliding). In people's views, is the soft close mechanism worth it, in general? Quite a bit costly on top.

Existing bay window - reduce cold bridging

We have a UPVC bay window, which we'd ideally like to keep/improve rather than entirely replacing. We previously noticed some mould around some of the corner areas - we know that one of the panes of glass had a blown seal (which we will replace), so this was likely a contributing factor. However...

Optimal combi boiler for rainfall shower head

@Madrab We didn't, but will get in touch with them to see if they can provide this - thanks for your help!

Optimal combi boiler for rainfall shower head

@bernardgreen thanks so much, I understand that part much better now. I will send the spec of this boiler to our plumber for their review, but it's great to help me narrow down options.

Optimal combi boiler for rainfall shower head

@Madrab Thanks, that's useful! I hadn't realised the impact of H&C water, so that's useful to understand better. As an indication, we have recently installed new 25mm diameter pipe to the Thames Water supply line - do you think there would be any reason why the water pressure would not be enough?

Optimal combi boiler for rainfall shower head

@bernardgreen The Vaillant EcoTec plus says: "The ecoTEC plus is smart: when it knows you don’t need as much heating power, it can drop to using 16% of its maximum power saving on fuel and money." would this be the modulating aspect?

Optimal combi boiler for rainfall shower head

@bernardgreen thank you - being in a small flat, we have quite a limited space (a large cupboard for boiler + manifold), so I think a combi is all we have the space for. I am hoping there is a combi that meets our needs! When you say modulate/reduce, do you know what terminology I should be...

Optimal combi boiler for rainfall shower head

@cross thread the shower spec is the below - but I'm not 100% sure how to match this up to the boiler spec - does this suggest, at a MINIMUM, we'd need 17.5l/min water flow - in which case the boiler needs to provide at least 17.5 DHW l/m? The boiler I've been looking at have a Max DHW of...

Optimal combi boiler for rainfall shower head

Hello, we are having a rainfall shower installed - it's 200mm so bigger than usual size shower head, but not HUGE (I know there are some 300mm+). We will be installing a new boiler. Does anyone know what boiler specs would be ideal to deliver enough water for the rainfall showerhead? We were...

Extending a solid floor (by ~7-8cm)

Hello, we have a solid floor (hardcore, sand blinding, concrete sub-slab - and will be adding insulation, UFH and 100mm polished concrete over). However, we need to 'extend' this area by a small amount - about 7cm (w) x 70cm (l) - to account for where the doorways will be. The other side will...

Unavoidable thermal bridge with 100mm polished concrete floor?

@Mr Chibs thanks - the idea of 70mm (or thereabouts) perimeter insulation is a good idea as a bit of a compromise - I would need to check with the concrete people whether they think there's any risk of cracking in the area that will then just be 30mm (as they say min 75mm normally). I am not...

Unavoidable thermal bridge with 100mm polished concrete floor?

Am I right in thinking that thermal bridging where a 100mm polished concrete floor meets a door/glazed area is inevitable? We have cavity walls - we were going to lower the inner block and extend the insulation through to the outer block. I understand that normally perimeter insulation would be...

    Boiler installation/kitchen cupboards

We are doing a full renovation. We plan to have a wall of tall kitchen units. There is a brick masonry wall behind, however we planned to have a service void of around 5cm behind the kitchen units for pipes, wires, etc. For the cupboard which will have the boiler in it, does this need to have no...

Basics of preparing openings for new windows/doors in solid brick wall

Thanks @^woody^ - I am sure the builders will know what to do, but I am trying to do my own research to make sure when I speak to them, I am informed and know what to look for. When you refer to DPC in this case, is that just a small piece of damp proof membrane that will lie flat underneath the...

Basics of how to connect my hot water heating circuits

Thanks @flameport. And I assume if we have one thermostat for multiple zones, then we would need remote sensors in each of the different zones, to monitor temperature? Are UFH temperature sensors usually better in the floor, or in the room?

Basics of how to connect my hot water heating circuits

@flameport Thanks - so the UFH controller could then be connected to two separate thermostats? How do you set what thermostats apply to what circuits. e.g. One thermostat for 3 circuits, and then another thermostat for the other 2 circuits. Sorry for the basic questions.

Basics of preparing openings for new windows/doors in solid brick wall

Hello, likely a basic question, but just want to make sure I have it down so we don't make any mistakes! We are renovating a Victorian property. We will have two windows being replaced - (1)UPVC bay window + (2) existing UPVC opening window being replaced with an alumnium one. And then...
