Connecting a new light direct into a light circuit at the CU

There are obviously better ways of doing things and more costly ways of doing things but im interested to know if these things can be done safely and within regulations if needs be. The decoration of a house can also severely limit what you can and cant do. 1. A light under the stairs needs...

Economy 7 and removal of it?

thanks andy. i assume you would have to add an isolator switch then because the meter is sealed and to remove the tails you would have to break the seals.

Design current: help working it out and how to do it

for lighting dising current, you add up all the power of the lights. you take each one to be a linimum of 100w even if its lower, then apply diversity of 66% to get the design current. a lighting circuit supplying 6 lights at 100w each would mean that (6 x 100) / 230 = 2.6A to which you then...

Economy 7 and removal of it?

im not sure. my old house had economy 7. there was 2 meters but i dont really know how it works. i thought the 2nd meter was only for the electric storage heaters. if the heaters are removed and a totally new install is to be done, do the electricity board come and change it so there is just one...

Does this cable have to be run in steel conduit in a notched

yes i do understand that they have to be in holes 50mm below the top and 50mm above the bottom and i understand why. this is due to compression and tension. when a joist bends the top is in compression and the bottom is in tension. the centre line isnt in either compression or tension and so...

Old meters, meter tails and earth?

i thought if the earth came from inside the enclosure where the main fuse is then it was TNC-S (PME) and if it came from a clamp around the main cable that came in it was TNS? i have seen diagrams and read descriptions but never actually seen many or seen actual pictures. i will do a search for...

Voltage drop - help working it out.

yes i get it thanks ok so for 10mm cable, it will carry 63A clipped direct, the volt drop is 4.4 if you have 10 mm cable and a 10KW shower running 15m in length. the current is 10000/230 which is 43.5A (4.4 x 43.5 x15) / 1000 = 2.9V so it is within the limit of 9.2V ok all clear now...

Brand new central heating/water system. Plastic or copper?

Its obviously easier to do a new install for a combi boiler in plastic but ive never used it before. What is a rough price difference for using plastic? is it much more expensive over copper? Is it easy to do? is there different types of plastic, different thicknesses, different fitting...

    Alarms

Are alarms covered by Part P and do you have to be Part P registered to install one? Do they have to be on their own circuit or can you take them off the socket ring or lighting ring? Am I right in saying that alarm/telephone cable cant be run together with electric cables?
