Baffled by cold rad - Not sludge. maybe blockage?

No they’re not accessible. I’ve no idea where they are. Possibly in the cupboard floor where the hot water tank was. Problem rads are about 18-20metres from the boiler. I feel I’m pretty good at DIY for a girl and willing to tackle anything but this is starting to feel like a big job???

Baffled by cold rad - Not sludge. maybe blockage?

Yes the system has mostly worked fine for the 7 years we’ve been here. Couple of years ago I cleaned the gauze in the boiler return pipe as it was rusted up once and we lost all heat downstairs. Put it all back together, added some inhibitor and it worked fine. This radiator always used to...

Baffled by cold rad - Not sludge. maybe blockage?

Thanks for your reply. I did a chemical flush about 4 weeks ago. The radiator works for a short period of time (3-6 days) after I disconnect and force water through the valves. I’ve tried turning off valves and bleeding. What ideas do you have has to how else I can clear the...

Baffled by cold rad - Not sludge. maybe blockage?

There’s a very small amount of air spluttering out but nothing significant when the water first comes through. Then it’s quickly just water flowing uninterrupted and fast.

Baffled by cold rad - Not sludge. maybe blockage?

Thanks for coming back to me. I’m no pro but hate being beaten. You can see below that I’ve tried a lot over the last few weeks. The thing is I’ve no idea if it is balancing or something else which is causing the rads to stop working after 3-6 days.

Yes. If I disconnect the valves, leave the boiler to top up and simultaneously force a couple of buckets of water through I have managed to get both working temporarily working twice.

Baffled by cold rad - Not sludge. maybe blockage?

Hi, I saw this in another thread. Do you think this might be worth a try in this situation?

You still think this is possible even though when I disconnected the rad the water was gushing out?

Baffled by cold rad - Not sludge. maybe blockage?

Thanks for replying. I really appreciate it. No hot water cylinder. our system was changed to a combi about 8 years ago before we moved in. Bypass - I’m not sure. how can I identify? Yes closed down 2x towel rads for the test. Didn’t make any difference.

Baffled by cold rad - Not sludge. maybe blockage?

The mystery gets more frustrating……. To recap post chemical flush I’ve: disconnected the hallway rad opened each valve in turn to force through and fill two buckets. Comes through quickly without obstruction. both problem rads (hallway and living room) work for 6 days No heat in the hallway...

Baffled by cold rad - Not sludge. maybe blockage?

I‘m not sure. It’s probable. is there a way to tell without visibility? The hallway rad used to be first rad to get hot downstairs after the upstairs rads.

I turned them off using the TRV’s

Baffled by cold rad - Not sludge. maybe blockage?

Thanks. Tried this this morning and still nothing from the hallway. All other downstairs rads are fine. I don’t understand how it can work fine for 6 days and then stop again. I’m debating whether to balance the whole system from scratch inc temp. Drops but as it didn’t make any difference when...

Baffled by cold rad - Not sludge. maybe blockage?

So last Saturday after flushing out the sentinel I did as you suggested and the flow came through on both sides at a decent speed. I filled a couple of buckets up from each pipe. I only did this on the hallway rad. The two problem rads (hallway and lounge) got hot! I was amazed. I balanced all...

Baffled by cold rad - Not sludge. maybe blockage?

Just to ensure that i'm doing as you've suggested. I'm conscious I tried this a few months ago and it didn't really work. Do you mean physically remove the rad? Or just disconnect the flow and return from the rad (keeping both valves open) and then let it run for a minute or two.

Ok. Should I do this once I’ve flushed the system from the sentinel?

Baffled by cold rad - Not sludge. maybe blockage?

Ah ok I thought microbore was plastic pipe. It’s been in for nearly 20 hours but was off overnight from 10-7am so it’s been circulating for 13 hours.

Its a gas combi. Baxi Duo-Tec 40. Pump running at full speed. Boiler temp set at 68C but turned it up to full when I put the sentinel in. I tried taking the TRV's off but no difference.
