    Mitre saw 'burn' mark

In theory it should be a brand new blade, since it's the one that came with the saw, which was new and unused before I started this project. I don't recall rushing either. Being my first time with a mitre saw, I was being extra cautious about every aspect of what I was doing. Can sharpness...

    Mitre saw 'burn' mark

I cut eight timber joist legs for some very basic tables. Each one ended up with the same 'burn' mark with a slight indentation. Don't know why it happens, but obviously it needs to stop. I was cutting with this.

What size hole did you drill for the plugs...?

    French Cleat Fixing

Looks like 18mm ply...? I'm currently looking at something like this to hang my mirror. It would make your gap between the wall and the mirror more like 4mm.

    Best Metal French Cleats...?

Thanks. Do you have personal experience with them though...?

    Best Metal French Cleats...?

Came across 'Eagle Clips' whilst watching random YouTube videos about mirrors. Interested in getting something like that to hang my mirrors with. Looking for advice on whether or not they are the best and / or cheapest brand...? Don't fancy the plastic variety much.

    New socket for freezer

Why 20 amp instead of 16, like the existing fridge MCB...?

    New socket for freezer

I'm in greater Belfast and I've been renting this place from the Northern Ireland Housing Executive for about 20 years. About 6 months ago I had my "5 yearly electrical inspection" (which definitely doesn't even happen every 5 years...). I fully expected the guy to inspect my work on the...

    New socket for freezer

Any reason then not to just put a new MCB on the far left and have it protected by the existing RCCB...? I definitely want to comply with the regs, maybe I should have made that clear from the start.

    New socket for freezer

I want to put a new socket, for a freezer, in my hallway, right beside where my fuse cupboard / consumer unit is. The consumer unit already has a dedicated 16 amp radial circuit for the designated fridge socket in the kitchen. A YouTube video led me to believe that you can have 2 radial...

    Long square recommendations...?

I can't seem to find a 'try square' over 600mm / 12 inches. Which I guess leaves me with a 'T square'. Looking for recommendations on a good T square that is actually square, and is thick enough and strong enough to be clamped and used as a fence for my jigsaw. Been on the B&Q website and...

Joist timber condition after loft leak

Pretty sure we're looking at a rafter. Joists are the horizontal ones under your feet.

    Attic trapdoor 'gasket' ideas...?

I chose to try and plane the edges of my attic trapdoor, after I cut it down to size and added hinges, as per the instructions of the attic ladder that I got from B&Q, and now it's a bit wavy since I didn't secure the workpiece, I bought a really cheap block plane, and I'm a buffoon. I can make...

    Ceiling fan wiring question

Appears to just be a single MCB for the Lights. If you zoom in on the very bottom right, under the main switch, it says "CIRCUITS NOT RCD PROTECTED".

    Ceiling fan wiring question

Again; I'd really need an explanation as to why I would disobey the manufacturer's advice...

    Ceiling fan wiring question

Acceptable in what regard...? If I'm going to disregard what it says in the manual, I need to know exactly on what grounds I'm doing it. The existing wiring is just standard ceiling rose wiring.

    Ceiling fan wiring question

It will be when I put additional wood between the joists, in rooms where it's necessary. That much was obvious to me. It weighs about 5kg.

    Ceiling fan wiring question

On the motor housing it says "38W (Fan) 18W (LED Light)" On the base / mounting plate it just has simple Live, Earth, and Neutral terminals, that run to a push-fit connector that connects to the main motor housing. Nothing special or complicated. (in my novice opinion) I don't think there's...

    Ceiling fan wiring question

OK, but do I actually need one, or are they just being over-cautious in the manual by recommending such a thing? My understanding is that as a DIY'er I'm not allowed to touch the 'consumer unit', and I'd need a qualified electrician to put such a thing in. If I do need one, how do I know how...

    Ceiling fan wiring question

I just bought this ceiling fan with remote from Amazon on a Black Friday deal, on the assumption that I could just wire it into the light circuit and use the normal light switch. Let me quote from the manual though: Safety Precautions 6. Do not connect the fan's power supply to any dimmers...
