    Cost of 10m RSJ

I've been looked at this post which talks about two 10m RSJs (40cm x 17cm)which split into 5 pieces. Does anyone know roughly how much these would cost each? I'm looking to do exactly same thing but getting a rough quote without engineering calculations is difficult. I'm trying to agree my...

    9m loft conversion

Did you end up doing this? I want to do exactly the same... Wondering how much the beams cost to make roughly...?

Get power to gazebo for lighting

I take your point, but I think these are semi-professional/commercial lights and are expected to run up to 1000m which is why they run LEDs on 240V DC. So the average dosmetic user wouldn't realise the difference I was hoping a sparky would set me right :)

So... The festoon lights I'm looking at are a professional range running on 240V with a rectifier which converts to 240V (!!! According to supplier). I contacted the supplier and they said I need an RCD Type B... Rather than the standard Type AC. What type of RCD is usually in the consumer...

Get power to gazebo for lighting

Ah! Yeah. See you're point. I guess the only additional reason would be that it trips faster than the one on the house CU... For convenience... But perhaps no safer

Fair point but thought I'd mount it outside so I don't have the chase the internal wall and the CU is against the external wall so and easy drill through.

Oh maybe RCD Type B is for 3 phase, so perhaps I need RCD Type A (AC & pulsating DC). Although does this matter, if the festoon lights aren't actually earthed, as they are likely double insulated (as I read elsewhere)

Get power to gazebo for lighting

I've decided to take a fused spur off the Socket ring main in the garage. I've ordered an external Fused Spur with RCD. https://www.screwfix.com/p/british-general-ip66-13a-weatherproof-outdoor-switched-passive-fused-spur/20523 I'm also ordered a double smart socket to attach at the gazebo...

What size cable would I need for that? Presume to potentially carry the full 32A of the Breaker.

Get power to gazebo for lighting

I think I'm going to add a Wifi Switch and then hard wire the lights from that. I presume the lights will be 240V and hopefully have a waterproof transformer. It would be better to have an RCD built into the mini consumer unit. Can I just replace the main breaker with an RCD one? Or do I need...

Get power to gazebo for lighting

Given I can't add another breaker into the consumer unit, I guess my only option is to take a fused spur off the ring main at the consumer unit? Is it enough that there is an RCD on the main consumer unit in the house... and this is in the garage? Should I upgrade the master breaker in the...

Get power to gazebo for lighting

I have a small gazebo that I want to hang 40 led festoon lights on and maybe 4 small tree lights. I have a small consumer unit in our annexe with master breaker (MK5500s) only 2 breakers (B32/5932s sockets & B6/5906 lights). I'm going to use 25m of SWR armoured cable clipped to a solid fence...

Insulating external (above ground) hot water pipe

I pinged Uponor sales an email and they said I need the Ecoflex range. "Thermo" for heating pipes and "Aqua" for hot water. They said they sell it by the Metre. The Thermo pipes look huge but very well insulated.

Insulating external (above ground) hot water pipe

We have gas central heating in our house for the radiators. We have a separate annexe and I want to pass the heating hot water to that building to supply a couple of radiators. If I pass a pipe between the two buildings, it will pass 1metre which is outside and above cover so needs to be...

Concrete in posts for wooden gazebo

I'm going to build a triangular 3.5m x 3.5m gazebo with pressure treated 100x100 fence posts. I've considering concreting the posts directly into the ground, but the way I've designed it I will need to construct the frame before fixing it into the ground. Therefore I'm looking at some supports...

Does a knee-wall always need to touch the end truss

I have a modern (5 year old) house with trussed roof and want to convert the loft with steels, etc. I'm trying to get a rough idea where the knee-walls would be on either side, to get a feel with the eventual room width and window positions, etc. Do the new knee-walls sitting on the new...
