    Suspended floor joists and damp

Yeah I was thinking to dig it out, just really weird and wondered if anyone had an idea if what it was. I’ve got a roll of DPC, will do! That timber on the near sleeper wall is just balanced there to check my levels, I’ll be putting a layer down when the timbers go in tomorrow. Thanks

    Suspended floor joists and damp

I’ve noticed that the honeycomb wall between the dining room and the sitting room seems to have most of the holes filled in with some kind of white powder, like chalk(/lime?) - any idea what/why/how and if I should remove it? It is surely blocking the airflow but I don’t understand how or why it...

    Suspended floor joists and damp

Hi, wonder if anyone can help me; I’ve rebuilt the dwarf walls, does the piece of timber that sits on top of the dwarf walls need to be a certain thickness or specification? Is this piece of timber called the wall plate? I’ve bought a roll of DPC - so on top of the honeycomb wall, is it...

    Suspended floor joists and damp

That could be the same room! I’ve even got that Bosch SDS I cut a channel to separate the concrete slab from the side of the house earlier today so will see what this does to the dampness in corner 2 over the next few days. When I rebuild my sleepers I will add more holes in them for...

    Suspended floor joists and damp

Hmm I wonder if the garden stones aren't a great idea then due to roots/weeds amongst them. Somebody previously mentioned using gravel instead of concrete so I thought this was a great way to avoid paying for a skip and buying gravel - guess I could toast them with a weed burner before bringing...

    Suspended floor joists and damp

I’ll asses the feasibility of doing that with the sleeper walls, whether rebuilding shorter or adjusting what’s already there. I guess removing one brick and some mortar would mean about 70mm more so you could pretty much get a 7” joist in.. also means more space for insulation. So did you do...

    Suspended floor joists and damp

That’s reassuring, appreciate it! To be honest I’m not too down yet; I had a fairly good idea of the size and kind of task I was taking on, even if I’m still working out exactly what the issues are. Somebody else has suggested posts to support the midspan and reduce bounce, though now I know...

    Suspended floor joists and damp

In terms of what is causing this damp.. you will have seen the puddle on the concrete slab in my first picture of the previous post - there is also some kind of drainage that is open to the right of the back door, runs under concrete for a short while, then open again and is supposed to drain...

    Suspended floor joists and damp

Here is another floorplan. Corner 1 is the area that was damaged, but shows no signs of damp since I cleared out the mess that was down there. Corner 2 continues to have a damp issue, though I think I have figured out why. More on this later. There is only one air brick, which I have marked on...

    Opening chimney for range master

No trouble, thanks for that insight. Dammit, so close to the 900mm model, yet so far. Don’t think they do a Rangemaster under 900mm, desperate to use that space for something useful and can’t really afford to take it out altogether. Never laid bricks in my life, I’m pretty handy at most...

    Opening chimney for range master

I’m not going to lie I was spooked by the movement in the bricks of the arch and the course above it, long before I saw the other posts. I’m not interested in getting in the middle of an ongoing argument, I came here for opinions and advice and appreciate anyone who’s taking the time to chuck in...

    Opening chimney for range master

Thanks both. So, back to my original post, maybe I was right to be concerned that my chimney was being supported by a pair of 2x2’s

Also noticed that some of the bricks under the hearth look like they’ve fallen in Got most of the plaster off, any thoughts on that big crack going to the ceiling? Assuming it’s down to the arch slipping in a bit, possibly even linked to the pics above?

    Opening chimney for range master

Yeah I’ve stopped - as I was moving the big block, the arch and the entire course of bricks above it were moving, all the mortar between the bricks is crumbling in the arch, I have to say I’m not feeling at all confident about taking anything below it out without another lintel in first

    Opening chimney for range master

Additional pics of the chimney breast with plaster removed to ceiling height in any areas with cracking Started removing below the arch but the big white slab seems quite deep and solid so I may need to find another pair of hands before continuing, it’s hard to see here but I’ve chipped out...

    Opening chimney for range master

Ok! Trusting my house in the words of a stranger from the internet - sounds sensible. I'll start removing. Noted on the ducting, sounds like I need to look into this more. I would very much appreciate that - let me know what you need to know and see. Many thanks

    Opening chimney for range master

Thank you for taking the time. The three left-most bricks of the arch move 1-2mm if I wobble them.. are you sure it will hold?? Will remove more plaster - thanks. Can I ask why you say to stay away from the rounded corners? Was hoping to take all the plaster off and re-do with square edges...
