When did PVC sewer pipe and fernco fittings come in to widespread use?

Found some questionable joins of pvc to clay in the sewer around my 1970s built extension. The 6 inch clay pipes are just broken out (quite neatly) at the side with the 4 inch pvc inserted in. Seems to have worked for 50 odd years. This got me wondering, did the pvc to clay adaptors (Fernco...

Concrete Windowsill Sizes in 9inch hollow blocks

I'm assuming the window sits right on the back of the concrete sill on the upstand. I'd need say 50-75mm internal reveals, so in my head the cill is sat in the middle of the block with some infil behind it internally. Above image just for reference for a windowsill in 215 block

Concrete Windowsill Sizes in 9inch hollow blocks

Does anyone have experience in fitting precast concrete sills in to old walls built from single block. In this case it is 9 inch hollow block (cavity block), but similar in principle to solid block I guess. This is a retrofit window and cills will need to match existing which overhang perhaps...

Widen Fireplace - Support Flue (4 Inch Block)

Thanks, I should have mentioned the flue will be lined with a flexi kit. I'll get some pictures shortly. Part of me suspects there is perhaps blockwork behind those angled gathers supporting the flue, meaning the construction is something like this:

Widen Fireplace - Support Flue (4 Inch Block)

My fireplace and chimney is built from 4 inch blocks. The gather to support the flue is just two angled blocks resting on the first layer of block below the lintel as in the diagram. I haven't figured out what holds these up yet. It could be a pre-cast gather but it looks like block. I want to...

Red Stain / Paint on facing brickwork

Previous owner once painted or stained the facing bricks a deep red and the mortar a bright white. It looks like a 1980s door-to-door salesman job as a few other properties have a similar stain. It looks awful but the original brick underneath is a more traditional orange colour judging by the...
