How to stop rain coming down outside of flu pipe

Great idea. In fact I think I'll take both you and John's advice and do both. Belt and braces approach! I do not want to be getting scaffolding again. Thanks for all your help guys it really is appreciated. I will repost once I get it sorted. I have the scaffolding for as long as I want and...

How to stop rain coming down outside of flu pipe

Yeah, it's attached and out of sight as you said. If the worst came to the worst I would just hack the thing to bits! I'll take your advice and run in some fire rope, even if I twist two standard width ones together. I just wished there was some kind of sealant I could use to help it stay in...

How to stop rain coming down outside of flu pipe

Yep I agree about the cowl and a deeper skirt, I shouldn't have gone with this cheap generic one. From memory, the flu is probably around 7" with a 5" liner so there is quite a gap. The rain has to be coming in between pot and cowl, especially as the gap is so big. I would remove the cowl, but...

How to stop rain coming down outside of flu pipe

OK, so here's a couple of pics. Looking from below there is a big gap. It's not clear in the pic, but I can get my fingers right under on the left side between the pot and pot hanger, so a 20mm gap or so. When the wind blows badly as it does here (which is when it pours down the chimney), I can...

How to stop rain coming down outside of flu pipe

Yeah, this is the system I have. I plan on getting up today, but we just discovered we have no water in the house. We're on a private water supply and this now takes priority. Oh the joys of running repairs! When I do get up there I will take some pics

How to stop rain coming down outside of flu pipe

Cheers John. So it's not unusual to seal it with mortar then? That sounds like a plan. I'll get up there later today once the scaffold is up and take a good look..

How to stop rain coming down outside of flu pipe

So last year, I installed a woodburner in our house. I've done this before and worked with stovefitters in the past, so I have a fair grasp. The issue I'm having is that we are in an exposed area of Scotland, and when it rains with wind, water is coming down the chimney on the outside of the flu...

    Water butt pressure pump?

Thanks guys. Can I ask, would the Draper and the Einhell supply sufficient pressure for 1/2 inch hose do you think? I can't easily tap off the well pump as it's operated by float switch in the attic.

    Water butt pressure pump?

Just to clarify. Yes, we are on well water. The house has a pressure pump for upstairs and all showers, but the rest of the cold water is gravity from the tank in the loft which is where the outside tap is connected to. This is just too low for the long hose our large garden needs. I've looked...

    Water butt pressure pump?

We live in a dorma, and the gravity feed downstairs is adequate for the house, but no good for a long hose.

    Water butt pressure pump?

We have gravity fed cold water downstairs which is adequate, but the outside tap is in the garage some way away. Using a connected hose is obviously next to useless for most tasks. So I thought about linking a few butts together and installing a pump. That was until I looked...I just want a...

    Mortar raking advice needed

No, I'm not doing anything until I take a good look up there and feedback. It may be a week or so though depending on the scaffold. I'll restart this thread and maybe pm you if that's ok?

    Mortar raking advice needed

You know what, I will give it a try. Maybe the safer option and I can at least rule it out before I try one of the grown up toys!

    Mortar raking advice needed

@ree the stringy stuff is just cobwebs from under the lifted tiles. Do you mean the lead is not a single sheet? I'll get the scaffold put up and then come back with some better pics. But the reason I don't suspect the flashing is because heavy rain does not produce and leaks. It's only when the...

    Mortar raking advice needed

I presume he meant blood! Why not use 9" on false stone? But I guess the 9" is the only option I have

    Mortar raking advice needed

No, the main issue with the pointing is behind the chimney and at the top. I've seen the pics from the roofers who have been up there, but can't send my own until the scaffolding is up. But there are sections with some nasty cracks with 3-4mm gaps. Attached is a pic one of the roofers sent me...

    Mortar raking advice needed

It's deceptive I've tried lol! I don't like red stains but may have to take the risk. There are some nasty cracks in the mortar. The rest is rock hard. Probably a 3-1 mix.
