    Mastic over grout

About 36 hours after grouting a shower with a light grey grout, I ran some clear silicon down the vertical corners. The grout under the silicon now looks almost black (and has stayed like that for 3-4days now). So will the grout dry out back to light grey again at some point?

Indoor floor tiles straight over DPC?

Hi all, We have had this porch built and now want to lay a tiled floor. Is it ok to apply tile adhesive straight onto the DPC visible near the door? If not what goes on first? We’ll be putting down an uncoupling Matt too as the floor tiles will cover the screed floor and currently...

Outdoor Steps and handrail to porch

All seems a bit petty re the height of the first step. Surely I could lay an inch of gravel on my path and voila, height is less. I won’t do that but it does all seem daft.

Outdoor Steps and handrail to porch

You think hand rails both sides? Steps are 900mm wide. Top platform 1,200mm wide. Where it meets the previous path is the only issue, perhaps photo is misleading on the rest and they actually measure ok/consistent. I think perhaps I left the angle ever so slightly on the existing path slabs...

Figured out how to reduce iPhone photo size (email it to someone, Outlook offers to reduce size).

Outdoor Steps and handrail to porch

We are doing this under the eyes of building control. The porch involved new front door/thermal foot print. This front step is the last thing for them to visit to check.

Outdoor Steps and handrail to porch

We’ve built a porch. Owing to the slope of our front garden we have 4 steps taking you up the 2.5m approach to the front door. Before the porch we had a sloped path to the old front door. The steps have 150mm rise each, except for the first one, as you step off the existing path, which has a...

100mm cavity U value regs fix

Thought I should report back what came out the wash… (after over a week of chasing BC for a call back). BC gave us ok to fit 37.5mm insulated plasterboard (25mm PIR, VCL and 12.5mm plasterboard) dabbed to the inner blockwork face “increase the overall insulation and is accepted as meeting part...

100mm cavity U value regs fix

Our builder used fullfill wool insulation in our 100mm cavity (a simple 1m x 2m porch). Building control have told us “this construction doesn't comply with Approved Document L. This construction achieves 0.35W/m2K when it needs to meet 0.18W/m2K. Please provide details of how this porch will...

    Soakaway-porch

I just chatted with the building control person on the last visit (checking roof structure), and we sized up the water run off requirement together. Naturally they do not give advice but they did describe the following: For regs sake, they suggested the small roof did not warrant a soakaway, but...

It does required regs approval (insulated, new front door…).

    Soakaway-porch

Hi Is there a building regs threshold for new roof square meterage that determines whether or not a soakaway must be installed? We’re building a small porch. 2.3 sqm footprint. Water run off is not a lot for such a small roof. The house is 2.2m above the lane (and 9m from it), with a sloped...

solid oak front door or not?

I'm having a porch built (brick, enclosed, tiled roof type) which faces West on and end terrace house, in a village in Hampshire. The builder suggests we go with a composite door, due to hardwood doors sticking and warping when they face the elements and sun. How big a problem is this? Are these...

    Soil Management plan

Thank you. Have trawled and found a simple example. It does seem a simple paragraph will do just stating the obvious. very much a box tick. I guess they're just applying a one size fits all approach that, at my end of the spectrum, is daft.

    Soil Management plan

Ive submitted a planning application for a enclosed brick porch 1.2m x 1.9m with tiled roof - required due to being on a boundary line with next door. Otherwise its basically within the proportions for a permitted dev. We're in the Southdowns National park but not in the conservation area or...

Fill a gap between concrete to floorboard

Hi Wondering what to use for this gap. Needs to be level and smooth but not fussed re appearance as under a rug. The photo shows a gap between floorboard trim and old concrete hearth edge. The floorboard trim is tatty and slopes down - so we need to cover the wood trim and make level with the...
