Top-up loft insulation - Building Regs

I've only just had a visit by a professional insulation company who have brought my loft insulation up to the new recommendations. My loft too was partially boarded and I use it for storage. The insulation company advised they would simply lay the new insulation blanket on top of the boards...

    Grundfos CH pump not working

No frost here yet. You must be soft or live further North/inland than me  Thanks for the suggestion, tincup. Someone also suggested to me that there might be sludge in the pump. I imagine there would have to be a fair amount to stop it working! Anyway, looks like I'll have to call...

    Grundfos CH pump not working

Maybe I should add that the boiler heats water for the central heating system and/or the hot water (tank in airing cupboard). When we drained the central heating circuit it was not possible to heat the water - neither the pump not the boiler would start when (in our ignorance) we attempted this!

    Grundfos CH pump not working

Hi everyone, like lots of people I have been sorting out my CH before the cold weather arrives. This weekend I drained the system, flushed and cleaned two radiators that were not working. We refilled the system, bled the radiators/pump and switched on the CH to check it was working alright...

    tiling bathroom

The guys at Topps Tiles seem to be the only ones who know what they are talking about in my area. I went to two other tiling/plumbing suppliers and they tried to palm me off with PVA size and waterproof grout. One guy even advised me to scratch the plasterboard as a key for the tiles :shock...

    tiling bathroom

Are there any other brands apart from the Dunlop sealant? Or alternative treatments? I am in a similar position to the original poster, my bathroom shower used to be a massive (disabled) acrylic unit, which I have now removed (exposing the plasterboard stud wall) and replace with a new...

    Insulation for bathroom roof

Thanks nige and salem! I will check out kingspan and celotex. But I am curious, how does polystyrene degrade cables? You mean electricity cables do you?

    Insulation for bathroom roof

My bathroom is cold in winter and very hot in summer. I cut an exploratory hole in the ceiling and found there is no insulation, just TILE->FELT->70mm RAFTER->10mm PLASTERBOARD. This part of the roof is angled at about 35 degrees, beneath the eaves of the back of the house. I am wondering if...

    Small gas cookers

My kitchen is only 2.3m x 2.2m and I have a floor standing cooker (with eye-level grille) which is only 500mm x 500mm in plan. It is over 40 years old and I would like to replace it. However, ALL gas cookers these days seem to be 580-600mm deep minimum. An extra 100mm is a lot when you only have...

    CH pump problem?

Okay. Boiler model is either a Baxi WM 531 RS or a WM 401 RS The pump is a Grundfors Selectric. The wire from the pump feeds into a junction box which is, in turn, connected via a switched fuse box to the mains. I have turned the power off at the switched fuse box and the pump has stopped...

    Aluminium Double-glazing

Great answer, very useful, thanks :) And it is useful to know to ask for trickl vents, I had a feeling they would be essential

    Aluminium Double-glazing

I am looking to replace an old SG kitchen window with a DG unit. However, the advantage of my existing metal window is that there is maximum glass and minimum window frame to obscure the view of my garden. UPVC frames seem to be extremely thick in comparison and I am not a big fan of plastic...

    Double glazing

I am not a professional but it sounds to me you could just buy one of those tubes of Allpurpose waterproof flexible sealant from your DIY store. And you would need a 'gun' to go with it as well. With my back windows I simply squeezed a generous strip of the stuff on top of the old stuff. It is a...

    CH pump problem?

Obviously I am not an expert, but the pipes are continually hot between the boiler, the pump, and back to the boiler. I can feel a slight vibration when I touch the pump - I realise pumps normally run very smoothly and they often don't give obvious signs they are running, unless they have air in...

    CH pump problem?

Great site! Maybe I can pick someone's brain for some advice... I think there may be something wrong with my CH pump. I have a Baxi gas boiler in my bathroom controlled by a timer in my kitchen. When I set the timer to heat the water and/or the CH there is no problem, the water in the...
