Chimney on new house - wet in loft?

Joe-90 - yes it is the builders problem but try and get them to admit it is not designed like that! Pampers - thanks for the comments. There are indeed 2 trays one further up and one where I see the tray in the loft. The bricks above the tray in the loft are the ones that are saturated when...

Chimney on new house - wet in loft?

Hi, Brand new house and have just had the chimney fixed as no soakaways were fitted and the flashing appeared to route the water into the loft and onto the interior ceiling! However, I am still puzzled and hope someone can help. If I look at the outside wall from inside the loft at...

New side garage door - minimum distance from corner?

They seem to be set on the furfix route for the pier as this will meet building regs apparently. After all - it's good enough for the chimney stacks!! Just making sure I am not near them in the next big gales..... PH

New side garage door - minimum distance from corner?

Update: Builder is now proposing that although the door is too close to the corner that they put in a corner pier, a pier to the other side of the door and fasten them to the wall with a wall starter pack (Firfix). Now, I don't know why, but I feel a bit concerned on this. From my...

New side garage door - minimum distance from corner?

Thanks Static - very helpful. I also note that the hinges of the door are attached on the side of the 200mm of bricks (ie/ not the main wall) and the door opens outwards. Looks like I will be getting them to move the door and rebrick up the opening. I just don't understand how when they build...

New side garage door - minimum distance from corner?

OK. have now managed to assess the situation and the edge of the door frame is literally on the mortar join of the first brick in!! Standard house bricks are 200mm or thereabouts? What are the consequences of having this small a gap? Any idea what formal rules these are and where can I...

    Parquet - true definition?

Thanks for all the info WoodYouLike - has been really informative. Shows the danger of not having some sort of standard catagorisation for these floors. Continue with your education of the masses, I now consider myself informed (misled by vendor but that is a different issue!!). Thanks, PH

    Parquet - true definition?

That's the one!! So if they describe the floor as 'Parket', although it is wood engineered as we have established, and the sample has a label on that says 'Beech Parquet' then they are correct that it is parquet and I have no redress???

    Parquet - true definition?

I thought the name of the manufacturer was a bit strange - I got something like 'Griffindor' and are German I believe - seemed to sound a bit like that anyway but imust have had Harry Potter on the brain! Have not seen any manufacturing stickers/labels as it has been delivered unwrapped. If...

New side garage door - minimum distance from corner?

Size is a double garage, detached - single skinned so just the one brick thick. Don't know where the piers are from memory so I'll take a look later - however, the door looks like it is being cut in about 1.5 to 2 bricks in from the corner of the garage - hence my concern! PH

    Parquet - true definition?

WoodYouLike, Thanks for the quick response. Keep educating people as it is extremely difficult for the end customer to know exactly what they are buying!! Paying a couple of thousand for an upgraded floor that is described as parquet (about 40 sq m, if that) and then getting wood...

New side garage door - minimum distance from corner?

Hi, Having a side door put into a detached garage for access from the garden. Are there any limits as to how close to the rear corner of the garage you can have the door in case of compromising structural integrity? Thanks, PH

    Parquet - true definition?

Am in a bit of a quandary..... New house, ordered parquet floor for hallway. Being new to this I looked at the options in the nice display area and selected what was labelled as Beech parquet flooring. The sample was about 12 inches square and had some nice grain and what I can only describe...

Is there a 'fake' parquet available?

Have seen some parquet flooring in a house and it looks exactly the same finish as a laminate floor (uniform colours over the entire space, glossy finish and feels like laminate underfoot). Is there a cheaper parquet available that has a softwood base and a 'laminate'/MDF type top rather than...
