Thanks, I'll give that a go.

    decent curtain rail

Wow, you can personally recommend those 250,000 curtain rails. Great. Doesn't really help me narrow it down if I'm honest, though.

    decent curtain rail

Hi all, I hope this is the right place to post, the other categories didn't seem to fit. I recently fitted a curtain rail in my back bedroom and in sort - it's no good. It's 3.6m long, from B&Q, with a beaded drawstring in channels inside it. basically, it just gets stuck. I think the...

Wow, that seems pretty good. Do you feel you could have done more on some days if you hadn't needed to keep the place livable in the meantime?

That sounds even better. I'm sure there are loads of people we could invite ourselves round to over a long weekend.

Thanks. That makes sense. But I have a little study (with one socket) off the landing which I haven't counted as a room as a) It's tiny and b) it doesn't have natural light. Also, there are sockets on the landing and in the hallway downstairs. Would they all need their own radial? I think the...

    Rewires

I'd like to go away for a week to let the sparks get on with it, but unfortunately I've no more holiday to take this year and I want it to be done before then. But I could book into a hotel or B&B in London with the wife to get out of their way. Especially if it saves time and cost (presumably...

    Rewires

Thanks for the reply. That is more or less what the set up is. I am not sure if there are routes in conduit. I know a lot of the lighting cables are metal sheathed and plastered straight in. Doesn't mean the ring is the same, of course. I'll prepare for the worst! Good, no hotel stay...

Connecting to an old lighting cable

OK, there's a new topic on rewires  Sounds drastic, but there are so many things that "might" be dodgy, due to age that I'm biting the bullet. Any input on that thread is much appreciated...

    Rewires

OK, new question. The electrics in my place are old. Not black-rubber-cable old, but Wylex fuse board old. There isn't anything "obviously" wrong with the electrics, but the wiring is old, there are no MCBs and no RCD protection. That in itself is a cause for concern. I have now decided on...

Connecting to an old lighting cable

I'm at work, so can't post any pics now. It's actually the cable that has an earth sheath, it doesn't have a seperate conduit. It's round.

Connecting to an old lighting cable

Thanks. As you say, it may be OK. There is a bracket holiding it down, which is connected to the mounting box. I'll get a pro in who can properly test the integrity, though.

Connecting to an old lighting cable

Hi all, I've got an old style lighting cable in a wall, with a metal sleeving around it, which acts as the earth. There is no earth cable on the inside. My question is, how do I connect to this?! The only ways I can think of to get an earth connection would be to solder or clamp something...

    2 + 1 gang mounting box

Thanks flameport, yes, that would do it too!

    2 + 1 gang mounting box

Yeah, you get those everywhere. Oh well, maybe I dreamed these ones!

    2 + 1 gang mounting box

Hi all, I'm sure I've seen these before, a mounting box that allows you to mount a double socket (or whatever) next to a single socket/switch/whatever. Has anyone got a link to where I can find one? Idealy a flush one. I could always use a "double" right next to a "single", but this is just...

    How long before wallpapering?

I thought a week would be about right before I read this: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070614133314AAY52ON I'll wait till it's all gone pink. I knew it was a load of rubbish!

    How long before wallpapering?

Hi all, I've just had a go at skimming the ceiling and walls in a room. The result is OK, but not great. I reckon if I fill and sand a few bits, then use thick lining paper it will look fine. My question is, how long do I need to wait before wallpapering? I have googled this and have seen...

    Light switch - Earth wire

Oh, sorry. Only one earth in this case. The earth from the switch cable and the supply cable are connected at the ceiling rose.
